Brookwood stars sign letters of intent
THOMASVILLE — High school is about to come to close for Brookwood School’s Jordan Thompson and Kurtis Brown. Thursday morning, they made their college destinations official.
Thompson, a girls basketball standout, will be staying close to home at Thomas University, and Brown, a football and basketball star, will be going to the University of the Cumberlands.
Thompson committed to Thomas University months ago, but Thursday’s signing ceremony signified a big step. “It means the world to me,” she said. “This is what I’ve been working so hard for and all the conditioning practices, it’s so exciting to finally make it official. Now it’s just counting down the days to graduation.” Brown also acknowledged his happiness on making his college choice.
‘I worked so hard to get here,” he said. “I’m glad it’shere.” An all-state GISA Class AAA selection, the 5-foot-9 Thompson averaged 12 points and five rebounds per game as a senior. She topped the Lady Warriors in free throw percentage and was second on the team in made 3-pointers.
Thompson said the TU coaches were supportive with her and her family, and having her family able to see her play collegiatelywas a plus. “It’s nice to have all my friends and family who were here to support me at the home games,” she said.
Thompson was the first all-state player for the Lady Warriors in eight years, girls basketball coach ToddWebb said. “She is a prime example of hard work paying off,” he added. Brown was an all-state selection in basketball and football.
“That is a huge accomplishment,” Brookwood athletic director and head football coach Shane Boggs said. Boggs also extolled the Cumberlands program and the level of play in NAIA. The Patriots played for the NAIA national title six years ago. The Patriots have put several players into the NFL, Boggs noted, and they were 12th in the final 2018 NAIA top 25 poll. “This is big-time athletics,” he said. “Just because you may not know the brand as well, don’t be deceived.”
Brown said stepping on the Cumberlands campus felt like being at a biggerversion of Brookwood. “Everybody was so happy,” he said.
The 6-foot-5 Brown starred at tight end in football and at power forward and center in basketball. He loves the versatility needed to play tight end, which is what he will play at Cumberlands. “I just love being able to be physical. I can be physical, like a lineman, but I can also catch passes,
like a wide receiver. It’s like the greatest combo,” he said.
Brookwood School Headmaster Dr. Randy Watts congratulated both seniors on their accomplishment and echoed Boggs’ exhortation to graduate from college in four years. “You have put a lot of hard work into being where you are,” he told Thompson and Brown. “You have a wonderful opportunity in front of you. Get your degree, have a great time athletics and use this as a tremendous launching pad for the rest of your lives.”
