Baseball Wins Pitching Duel over Deerfield-Windsor, 1-0.
Warrior Baseball outlasted Deerfield-Windsor at home on Tuesday, improving to 2-1 in Region play by the final score of 1-0. To read a full recap of the game, click here!
One run in the Bottom of the 1st inning is all the Warriors would need Tuesday evening to capture another Region win at Strickland Field.
After starting pitcher Jacob Lauderdale worked a quick 1-2-3 inning to start the game, Lance Wortman led off the Warrior half with a triple that snuck just inside the Right Field line. The ball traveled deep into the Right Field corner, giving Wortman's speed plenty of time to reach 3rd base safely. Lauderdale stepped into the batter's box and confidently drilled a hard ground ball to the right side of the infield. Wortman made it home easily on Lauderdale's RBI groundout and the Warriors had done all the scoring they would need.
Lauderdale proceeded to be perfect the first time through the Knights lineup and then some. With 2 outs in the Top of the 4th, a Warrior error followed by a hard-hit single saw the Knights threaten for the first time with runners on 1st and 2nd, but nothing came of it.
The Warriors had a good chance at some insurance runs in the Bottom of the 6th with a two-out rally. JP Chapman and Parker Mirick's back-to-back singles had runners at 1st and 3rd. Mirick stole 2nd base to put both baserunners in scoring position. The Warriors were unable to convert into any runs.
In the Top of the 7th, the Warrior defense was just barely able to hold on to the shutout. A leadoff single by Deerfield's Jack Kimbrel started the threat. He quickly stole 2nd and 3rd, giving the Knights the game-tying run just 90 feet away with still no outs.
The first out of the inning came on a pop-up to the catcher Zack Counts. The second out came on a controversial play that went in the Warriors favor. With Kimbrel appearing to be stealing home, Lauderdale threw to Counts and had the runner caught in a run-down. The Warriors were able to apply the tag for the inning's second out. The game was paused for nearly five minutes as Deerfield's coaching staff and bench vehemently argued for a balk call but were unsuccessful. The third out of the inning and final one of the game came on a dropped third strike and a throw down to JP Chapman manning 1st Base.
In the complete-game shutout, Lauderdale struck out 6, walked none, and only gave up 2 hits over the course of his 7 innings of work on the mound.
The Warrior offense notched five hits on the day, with the pivotal Wortman triple being the difference maker.
The win improves Warrior Baseball to 2-1 in Region play. Brookwood travels to Albany Thursday for Game 2 of the week against the Knights.
