Both Warrior Basketball Teams Fall in AAA Quarterfinal

The Lady Warrior and Warrior Basketball programs both finished successful seasons with tough defeats in their respective GISA AAA Quarterfinal matchups.

On Friday, the Lady Warriors were defeated by defending State Champion Pinewood Christian Academy. A cold-shooting 1st Quarter saw the girls fall behind by 10 and forced Brookwood to play from a deficit the rest of the way. A strong 2nd Quarter from Brookwood tightened the game, only trailing by a small margin at halftime by the score of 17 to 20.

The third Quarter saw Pinewood expand their lead to as many as 13, but the Lady Warriors continued to fight back - narrowing the deficit to 4 by the end of the period. The Lady Warriors were unable to carry enough momentum in the 4th, falling by a final score of 49-37. Holland Walker led the team in scoring with 17 points, Ann Murray Jackson netted 9 points for the game.

It was the first trip to the Quarterfinals for Lady Warrior Basketball since 2013. They finished their successful season with 16 wins against a tough schedule. Key highlights included ending Westwood's 35-game winning streak, going 4-0 at home against Region opponents, wins over much larger schools from Tallahassee such as Chiles and Leon, and a third consecutive appearance in the Region Championship game. The Lady Warriors will lose leading scorer and captain Jordan Thompson to graduation. She will continue her basketball career at Thomas University as a student-athlete.

On Saturday, the Boys made their trip to Macon to face Bethlehem Christian Academy. In front of a large crowd, the Warriors and Knights went head-to-head in a closely contested game that came down to the wire. Falling behind by 7 in the 2nd Quarter, the biggest lead for either team the entire game, Brookwood clawed back to within 1 immediately to start the 3rd Quarter on a Jack Boltja made 3-pointer. From there, it was a one-possession game the rest of the way. Entering the 4th Quarter, Brookwood still had not taken the lead back and trailed 32-33.

The game went into Overtime, tied at 41-41. Harrison Owens drove to the basket and converted a tough layup plus the bonus free-throw to give Brookwood a 44-41 lead early in the extra frame. With Brookwood ahead 45-43, Bethlehem Christian made a 3-pointer with 17 seconds left to take the lead. Brookwood had one final shot that didn't fall, ending the season with a tough 45-46 loss at the hands of the Knights.

It was the first trip to the Quarterfinals since 2011 for Warrior Basketball. They finish their successful season with a final record of 18-11 (6-2) while playing a challenging schedule. Key highlights included a win over Brooks County, two wins at the Freeport (FL) Christmas Tournament, winning both the Region's regular season (6-2 record) and post-season tournament - the first Region Championships for Warrior Basketball since 2011. The reward was hosting a 1st Round playoff game in front of a packed Beverly Athletic Center and defeating Dominion Christian 63-50. The Warriors will lose the important trio of Kurtis Brown, Jacob Atkinson, and Zack Milberg to graduation.
