Basketball Sends Seniors Out in Style, Beat Southland in Dramatic Fashion
The two Brookwood basketball programs capped off the regular season in dramatic fashion, with the Lady Warriors and Warriors both defeating Southland Academy on Friday night in close contests. The Senior Night victories capped a perfect Region record at home for the two teams, as they combined to go 8-0 in the Beverly Athletic Center against GISA AAA-3 opponents.
In the first game of the evening, the Lady Warriors’ defense won a game of contrasting styles. Facing Southland’s slower-paced, half-court game Brookwood came away with a 47-39 win. After trailing 7-9 at the end of the 1st Quarter, Brookwood took control with a 15-2 run to start the second frame and maintained that lead the rest of the way.
The Lady Warriors were led in scoring by TU signee Jordan Thompson’s 13-point night and Mollie Vick’s 10, all of which came in the first half for the junior point guard to spark the 22-13 halftime lead. An Erin Lewis made three-pointer gave Brookwood their largest lead of the game late in the 3rd Quarter, a 28-15 advantage. Thompson was also a standout defensively with five steals, Vick facilitated the offense with five assists, and Lewis scored 9 points - all from behind the 3-point arc.The win against Southland gives the Lady Warriors (14-10, 5-3) a win over each Region opponent this season.
The Lady Warriors will return to action in the AAA-3 Region Tournament at Georgia Southwestern University in Americus on Thursday against Deerfield-Windsor. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.

In the night’s final game, Brookwood needed an extra four minutes to down the visiting Raiders in overtime by the final score of 60-56. A back and forth first half saw the Warriors take a 23-16 advantage late in the 2nd quarter from working the inside-outside combination of Kurtis Brown and JP Chapman. Brown’s second foul sent the senior big man to the bench and Brookwood fell flat offensively with turnovers and cold-shooting. A 14-0 Southland run spanned the closing minutes of the 2nd quarter and the first part of the 3rd to put the Warriors behind 23-30.
Brookwood switched to full-court pressure to flip momentum and it paid off. 8th Grader Garrett Ledford provided a spark off the bench early in the 4th Quarter. The lefty guard knocked down a game-tying three-pointer and followed it up in a matter of seconds with a steal and score in transition to put the Warriors up 42-40. Harrison Owens sank two free throws with 45 seconds left to tie the game at 50 all. Owens’ started the overtime period with a 3-pointer for Brookwood to go up 53-50 and then assisted J.P. Chapman’s layup on a backdoor cut to lead 57-53 with 1:30 left. Leading 58-56 with 7 seconds remaining, Owens finished it off at the free-throw sinking two more foul shots to put the game out of reach at 60-56.
Chapman led the way on both ends of the floor with a 23 point, 9 rebound, 4 assist, and 4 steal performance. Owens tallied 12 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and 5 steals. Kurtis Brown finished with 15 points inside.
Brookwood (15-10, 6-2) will return to action as the #1-seed in the AAA-3 Region Tournament at Georgia Southwestern University in Americus at 8:30 p.m. Thursday. They will face the winner of Tuesday’s play-in game between Valwood and Southland.
