To the Brookwood Family:

It is time to look to the future.

I am pleased to announce that Brookwood School intends to safely open our campus for teaching, learning, and student life on the first day of school as scheduled on August 10, 2020. We are looking forward to seeing our students in person again!

Before I talk about how we will do this, I want to explain why this is so important. Human development research tells us what we know intuitively; children need to be in a structured and safe learning environment with peer interaction in order to meet developmental milestones and mature into healthy young adults. In short, kids need school. While our children have shown great resilience during this time, and our teachers did an amazing job of keeping teaching and learning going despite the challenges of the past two months, we know that learning from home via technology is not a long-term solution, especially for our younger students.

This summer, we are working diligently to prepare for a variety of scenarios. While we are all hoping for an unequivocal return to normalcy, we are prepared that guidelines and mandates for social distancing may be still in place. We are examining how we can safely gather and learn together to fulfill our mission of developing the whole child -- Academically, Physically, Spiritually, and Socially.

The most obvious challenges in preparing for the return of students to campus are physical. We feel confident that we can make adjustments to the way that we use space on campus to accommodate for our students. Further, we are already making changes throughout campus in our air handling systems with antiviral hospital-grade technology that cleans and improves air quality.

Clearly, we will work within the boundaries of government mandates and guidelines as we plan for the beginning of the 2020-21 school year. As an independent school, we can be nimble in use of space and schedule to meet our mission.

I would also like to share that we are continuing to review our summer camp plans in light of the most recent state guidelines and are optimistic about offering more on-campus opportunities earlier in the summer than planned. Please look for more details shortly.

I would like to encourage all Brookwood Warriors to embrace the pragmatic optimism that is fueling our plans for next year. I daresay that I do not think that you and your kids have ever looked more forward to the first day of school!

I will continue to update the Brookwood Family throughout the summer. In the meantime, please rest assured that we have a talented team on campus, a wise and resourceful Board of Directors, and the strong desire to get back at it.

Warmly,
Dr. Randy Watts
Headmaster
