Baseball Sweeps Valwood, Takes Sole Possession of 1st Place

After a comfortable 7-1 win on the road Tuesday at Valwood, the second game of the series Friday night in Thomasville contained plenty of dramatics. The walk-off 3-2 Brookwood win in extra innings gives the Warriors sole possession of first place in the Region.

The Warriors jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the Bottom of the 1st, courtesy of a hard hit ground ball by Jacob Lauderdale that the Valwood defense couldn't handle - allowing Lance Wortman to score from 2nd after he reached with a leadoff single. JP Chapman's grounder into a fielder's choice allowed Lauderdale to score from 3rd.

Valwood took a run back in the Top of the 2nd on a sacrifice fly, narrowing the Warrior lead to 2-1. After a few scoreless innings, the game was tied at 2-2 when the Valiants put another run across on a fielder's choice in the Top of the 5th.

In the Bottom of the 7th and the game still tied at 2-2, the Warriors seemed to miss a great opportunity when they had the bases loaded with only 1 out. Brookwood was unable to push the winning run across, and the game had to go to extra innings.

The Valiants were unable to pose much of a threat in the Top of the 8th, and Brookwood quickly took advantage in the Bottom half. Marcus West led off and hit a ball to right field, being able to reach 3rd with his speed on the basepaths after an error. Parker Mirick, who pitched a no-hitter earlier in the week, capped his week with a walk-off single to center field to score West.

Joe Parker was the starting pitcher for Brookwood, working 6 innings over 114 pitches. He scattered 2 hits and 4 walks while allowing the 2 earned runs. He struck out 6 Valwood batters. William Lee (7th inning) and Nic Lauderdale (8th inning) combined for 6 big outs of relief work, each allowing a hit. Nic Lauderdale gained the Win.

Brookwood takes over sole possession of 1st place in Region AAA-3 with the win and clinches at the very least a playoff spot. Two wins next week against Southland Academy would give Brookwood the outright Region title.
