Baseball Pulls Away, Beats Brooks County 14-6
Baseball is out of Region play this week and picked up a win Monday night, beating Brooks County High School by a final score of 14 to 6 at Strickland Field. The highlight of the night was the Warrior bats in the Bottom of the 5th Inning, scoring 8 runs to take back the lead. The frame was capitalized by Josh McCaskill's grand slam. Monday night's game started routinely enough, with starting pitcher William Lee retiring the side in the Top of the 1st. In the bottom of the inning, the Warriors scored two runs courtesy of a balk call and Joe Parker's RBI double to deep Left Center field.
Lee shut down the next five batters he faced, not allowing the Trojans first baserunner until there were 2 outs in the Top of the 3rd Inning. After Brookwood was unable to expand their lead in the bottom of the frame, the game exploded in the Top of the 4th, with the Trojans scoring 5 runs of their own to take a 5-2 lead.
The Warriors were able to take back a run in the Bottom of the 4th on another balk call, inching closer on the scoreboard to trail 5-3.
In the Bottom of the 5th, the first three Brookwood batters reached via Trojan errors. Josh McCaskill made them pay with a grand slam over the Left Field fence to regain the lead at 7-5. Later in the same inning, Harper McClendon doubled to bring in Jacob Lauderdale and Marcus West, expanding the lead to 9-5.
Evans Dodys was strong in relief, allowing only 1 Trojans run to give their final total of 6. The Warriors tacked on plenty of insurance runs late with the help of Trojan errors in the field.
The 14 runs scored were the second-most on the season for the Warriors, right behind the 15 they scored at Maclay earlier in the year. The win improves the Warriors to 4-5 overall on the year, staying put at 2-2 in the Region.
The team will return to action over Spring Break with three games at St. Simons Island.
