The Upper School expands and further refines the programs begun in the earlier years. Working closely together, the three school directors, department chairmen, and faculty provide the strong curricular continuity that is the hallmark of an outstanding college preparatory school. Brookwood offers Honors classes at all levels and Advanced Placement (AP) courses in a variety of subject areas, including Biology, Calculus, English, United States History, European History and Studio Art. Exceptional students are allowed to take courses above grade level, while special small, even individual, classes provide third and fourth year foreign language study to interested students.
Enriching the traditional college preparatory curriculum are electives and independent study. Cultural and scientific field trips regularly enhance course study, and juniors and seniors are invited to travel in Europe during the summer. Each year classes attend the Alabama Shakespeare Festival Theatre. Clubs, classes, and teams give young people opportunities to develop leadership, a spirit of cooperation, and service to others.
Brookwood graduates are accepted by and attend some of the nation's finest institutions including Duke, Emory, Georgia Institute of Technology, The University of the South, Wake Forest, Washington & Lee, Vanderbilt, Agnes Scott, and the Universities of Virginia, North Carolina, Florida, and Georgia.
An Upper School student spends his school day in an intellectually demanding, but supportive, environment that allows enough freedom so that he can develop the responsibility that must always accompany privileges.
In choosing Brookwood for the Upper School years, parents can know that their child will be prepared to compete successfully in the nation's best colleges and to become the well-rounded student whom colleges actively seek.
