Warriors win first title since 1986
DAMASCUS - Brookwood's first region title in more than 20 years was put on hold until Friday night. Even then, it didn't look like the Warriors would ever clinch the GISA Region 3-AA championship.
In a wild game that lasted more than three hours, Brookwood outlasted Southwest Georgia Academy 63-42, capturing the region crown.
"It was long, but very rewarding for us," Brookwood coach Shane Boggs said. "Very satisfying. The thing that's so great about it is watching all these seniors continue to grow up. They're very talented, but man, they're so much stronger right now, so much faster. It's a credit to how hard they've worked."
The win capped a perfect regular season and locked up a No. 1 seed in next week's playoffs.
The teams combined for more than 1,100 yards of offense, led by Brookwood's 638. Scott Cheney passed for 341 yards and four touchdowns - all in the first half - and the Warriors returned two fumbles for touchdowns in the second half to soar to the victory.
"That was incredibly lucky," said Boggs, referring to back-to-back offensive fumbles that were recovered and returned for touchdowns by Sean Bell and Rodger Walker. "It's one of those nights where those things went our way. We'll take them. Hopefully, we'll get some more down the road."
Brookwood had a dazzling first half offensive performance, tallying 407 yards. Cheney accounted for five first-half touchdowns, including tosses of 60 and 65 yards to Walker and Kevin Clark.
"It was about as good as you could play offense," Boggs admitted. "Scott was incredibly sharp; our line protected him so well. I don't know if he ever got hit."
Brookwood scored on all six of its first-half possessions, capped by a two-yard plunge by Ethan Howell. It followed a spectacular 52-yard reception by Walker, who skied for the catch.
Brookwood held a 32-point halftime lead before SGA struck for two quick scores in the third quarter. However, Brookwood squashed any momentum SGA had on its ensuing possession. Cheney gave the ball to Howell on a delayed draw up the middle, and he rumbled 49 yards for a back-breaking touchdown.
While Brookwood captured the region's No. 1 seed, the second seed is still up for grabs as Valwood defeated Tiftarea Academy on Friday 27-20. That forces a three-team playoff on Monday at 6 p.m. at Brookwood to determine the region's final playoff team.
