In anticipation of the Thomas County Relay for Life, taking place this Friday, students in the Lower School at Brookwood staged a "mini" Relay for Life last Friday (April 23) to raise funds to contribute toward a cure for cancer.
Four participants have already experienced and survived cancer: Susan Waters, a Brookwood kindergarten teacher; 3rd grader Julia Johnson, 1st grader Zach Singletary of Cairo, and 4th grader Mazie Barrett.
Joining those survivor "heroes," were 243 students who walked laps on the track, participated in a special devotion and heard testimony of the impact of their fund-raising efforts from Amy Mercer of the American Cancer Society.
Earlier this spring, Brookwood's Lower School students raised more than $3,700 through "Coins for a Cure." The April 23 mini relay added more than $3,000 to the funds through sponsorships and lemonade sales by the 5th graders, for a total of $7,062.95.
"We are so blessed by the overwhelming support of our students and our families," said Ashley Harper, director of the Lower School. She has invited Brookwood families to join Brookwood faculty members participating in the Thomas County Relay for Life.
