Administrators at Brookwood School decided to show students what they've been missing by not experiencing the "shag," a dance enjoyed by many of their parents in past decades and their grandparents back in the '50s and '60s.
For the March 12 Upper School "Sadie Hawkins" Dance in Brookwood's Stoddard Gymnasium, Wayne and Judy Bennett from St. Simons Island, Ga., offered an hour of shag dance instructions before the students took to the gym floor to practice the steps.
"In a continued effort to develop the whole child as part of our mission, we felt the need to provide an 'outside the box' lesson for our students that will last a lifetime," said Headmaster Mike Notaro. "This type of dancing will be a valuable tool for our students for many of their future social events as they attend college and beyond."
Keeping with the Sadie Hawkins theme, many female students invited boys as their dates, although a large number of the 9th-12th graders arrived alone or in groups. All were dressed in casual attire.
Middle School students had their own social event the same evening in Flowers Hall. Brookwood's coaches prepared hot dogs and hamburgers for everybody before the special events .
YOUR OTHER LEFT FOOT - Judy Bennett demonstrates dance steps for Brookwood Upper School students to follow.
WE CAN DO THIS - Learning to twirl their partner and move their feet at the same time was an achievement for these dancers.
BAREFOOT IS BETTER - Their parents might have attended "sock hops" in gymnasiums, but some students preferred dancing sans socks.
EVERYTHING OLD IS NEW AGAIN - Brookwood juniors Sloan Breese, Kathryn Drew, Katie Hooks and Trey Collins took to the gym floor to practice the vintage dance steps.
