Brookwood’s literary teams win first place in region competition
March 12, 2010

The Overall Region Literary Trophy went to Brookwood School on Tuesday, March 9, at the Region 3AAA competition of the Georgia Independent School Association at Darton College in Albany.

Brookwood students won five first-place awards, three second-place awards and five third-place awards in competition with Deerfield Windsor, Westfield Academy, Calvary Christian and Southland Academy. Brookwood was recognized with the overall win not only for Tuesday's achievements but also for the school's first-place finishes in One Act Play and Debate competitions that took place earlier this year.

First-place winners were: Boy's Solo - Davis Flowers, Piano - Rand Pope, Dramatic Oral Interpretation - Mickey Betters, Duo Oral Interpretation - Meredith Briscoe and John Moore, International Extemporaneous Speaking - Danny Steinberg.

Second place winners from Brookwood were: Argumentative Essay - Kyle Hunter, Personal Essay - Mickey Betters, National Extemporaneous Speaking - Jackson Brannon.

Students winning first and second place awards will advance to the State Literary Meet next Thursday at Valdosta State University.

Brookwood students winning third-place awards were: Humorous Oral Interpretation - James Farmer, Rhetorical Essay - Abby Lewis, Girl's Solo - Maizie Jones, Girls' Trio - Maizie Jones, Emily Claire Worthey and Katherine Wolff. Boys' Quartet - Colin Alderman, Davis Flowers, James Farmer and Rand Pope.

"All of our teams and students performed with distinction and skill," said Phil Danner, Brookwood's literary coordinator.

"Brookwood is very fortunate to have the level of participation in our literary events that we have. Unlike many schools that may only compete in select events, our students compete in each and every event. It is this team approach, combined with talented young people and able coaches, that enables us to achieve strong finishes. We are very fortunate to have such talented and bright students who are willing to hone their skills in academic competitions like literary, debate, one act play, and our drama program."

Barbara Lee is the vocal and musical coach at Brookwood. Marc Cramer worked with students in oral interpretation.
