Brookwood students lunch and learn in downtown Thomasville

KING CAKE -- Suzanne Alexander cuts the King Cake for the Brookwood 10th graders following their lunch at Izzo's in downtown Thomasville. Following the tradition originating with the French settlers in New Orleans, the cake contained a tiny ceramic or plastic baby, representing the Christ Child. According to the long-established custom, whoever finds the baby in his or her piece of cake is to bake the next cake to share and host the next party during the Mardi Gras carnival. A trip to the Thomas County Public Library followed the lunch break.

A WINNER -- Kristyn Fielding's piece of the King Cake contained the plastic baby. She subsequently brought cupcakes to school for her classmates at Brookwood, but again found the prize in her own cupcake. Another student volunteered to bring the next round of cake for the class.

LIBRARY RESEARCH - After searching through the Williams-Parker Library at Brookwood School and online sources, the 10th graders continued their research in downtown Thomasville at the Thomas County Public Library. Ann Larson, the English teacher who assigned the research project, said the students are writing papers on a person of achievement whom they admire.
