THOMASVILLE -- The Fellowship of Christian Athletes of Brookwood School traveled to Atlanta over the weekend before Presidents Day, Feb. 11-14, to assist with a Habitat for Humanity building project.

Brookwood's 12 students were selected to assist building one of the Habitat houses sponsored by Clark Howard. Howard, a consumer advocate with a nationally syndicated radio talk show designed to help consumers "spend less, save more and avoid getting ripped off," also is featured on CNN.

"We were supposed to build all day Friday and Saturday but the snow posed a problem for Saturday," said Amy Stalvey, the Brookwood sponsor of FCA.

"Our group worked with a group of architects and other organizations. The kids worked hard nailing, carrying walls and trusses, cutting out windows, installing showers and other construction tasks."

She said they worked in the Habitat for Humanity warehouse for three hours on Friday, where the students helped build the interior and exterior walls for houses.

The students participating in the Atlanta house-build project are Hayes Balfour, Sloan Breese, James Farmer, Rand Pope, Alex Walter, Kaitlyn Roberts, Mary Kathryn Pounds, Laura Courtney, Mary Claire Courtney, Emily Miller, Danielle Harrell and Sarah Taylor.

Stalvey and her parents, Tommy and Bonnie McMillan, accompanied the group as chaperones.

Stalvey said the FCA students will next tackle a Mission Marathon in Thomasville on March 5-7.

The Brookwood FCA students enjoyed visiting Atlanta attractions after their labor with Habitat for Humanity. Here, they take a break at Centennial Olympic Park following their visit to the Georgia Aquarium on Sunday.
