MARK TWAIN ON TRIAL
January 15, 2010

Students in Carolyn Nicholson's 8th grade English classes have read "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" and studied the life and times of the author Mark Twain, actually a "nom de plume" of Samuel E. Clemens. On Jan. 14, the students performed a reading of Nicholson's original play about Twain being put on trial for words his characters used, his writing style, dialect and subject matter - the remarkable story of a white boy and a runaway slave, Jim. The book has caused controversy since it was first published in the 19th century. Some authors, however, declare that all modern American literature comes from that one book called "Huckleberry Finn."
