WHAT'S IN A NAME? After studying the Middle Ages, 10th grade students in Kathy Bond's World History class researched and created their own family crests. Originally, knights in battle used a coat of arms to identify themselves, because one man in armor looked a lot like another. Also, in Medieval society where few people could read and write, pictures were very important. Each image and color in a coat of arms has significance, and these evolved as family crests. Caroline Penhallegon, Chris Alexander and Hannah Deaver display the coat of arms for their family names. Mrs. Bond, right, said all the students' creations will be displayed in her classroom for friends and family to view.
