Brookwood students learn by masquerading as mythical characters
November 17, 2009

For Brookwood School's annual Olympian Banquet, teacher Ann Larson's sophomore English class students researched their mythological characters and created costumes and accessories to represent them. Before attending a Greek dinner at the Plaza Restaurant, Hannah Jackson as Aphrodite, Reece Willis as Zeus, Rand Pope representing Poseidon, and Tyler Quinet as Apollo told their character's story in a presentation for students' parents at Mr. and Mrs. Steve Avera's home in Thomasville. "This event enhances and broadens our fall semester study of Greek mythology, 'The Iliad,' 'The Odyssey,' and 'Oedipus Rex,'" Larson explained.

Courtney Murray, as Medusa, won the best costume award at the Brookwood Olympian Banquet event.

Danielle Harrell, Melanie Morales and Sarah Chason were dressed as the Three Graces, the goddesses of joy, charm, and beauty who presided over banquets, dances, and all other pleasurable social events. They supposedly brought joy and goodwill to gods and mortals and endowed artists and poets with the ability to create beautiful works of art. The Brookwood sophomore girls described their characters to their fellow students and parents and to the Three Fates, who were their teacher-chaperones Ann Larson, Sherrie Callaway and Carol Sheftall.
