FROM THE HEADMASTER...

If you were not on campus last Friday night, you truly missed an experience that does not come along very often.  In fact, it has never happened here on the Brookwood campus.  Winning a state championship, whether in Athletics, Literary, Drama, or Debate, is a memory that will always be cherished.  Many students will never be a part of a winning state championship team. In fact, statistics show that only one in every 700,000 can claim that honor.  Pretty remarkable!  I remember vividly my first state championship and can replay the entire game down to every pitch.  I assure you our players and coaches will remember every play that occurred Friday night for the rest of their lives.  As a player, coach, cheerleader, Headmaster, and especially, a parent, there are few prouder moments.

The Brookwood family cannot begin to say how proud we are of this team, Coach Boggs and his staff (which I believe is the best in the state), our cheerleaders, sponsors, teachers, and the many volunteers that had a hand in this championship.  Way to go, Warriors!

We are approaching the last few days of the first semester and, as usual, there are many activities that will fill the time of our students from the Lower School through the Upper School.  We ask that you plan your time wisely, be sure that we do not lose sight of what we are here for, and as I have told the students and faculty, finish strong.  Do not let all the hard work that you have done in class slip away during these last few days.

Our administrative team and our faculty have been working and planning for the 2008-2009 academic year.  As you can imagine our summer will be filled with moving, renovations, and preparing.  During this particular time period we must plan well in advance for all of the pieces to fit.  Plans are in place to begin relocating classrooms, refurbishing parts of Flowers Hall and Chubb, moving out of the "Academic Cottages," moving into the new Upper School building, establishing new parking lots, and a number of other projects that must be completed during the summer months.  We are also in the process of formulating the school calendar.  Needless to say, our plates are full.

In order to accomplish the many tasks ahead of us we must have the funds to begin the process.  Please consider making a contribution to the future of this great institution by participating in our Annual Fund for Excellence or contributing to our Capital Campaign.

Please make it a point to check your email on a regular basis.  I know if you are reading this eNewsletter, this doesn't pertain to you. We have begun research through our webmaster to determine who and how often our eNewsletter is being read and our website is viewed.  We send this letter out to 996 people and last month we had approximately 30% of that number read it.  Part of our plan more than a year ago was to increase communication and to be sure we are doing as much as possible to keep our constituents informed concerning Brookwood.  Share with all your Brookwood family, alumni, and friends the importance of staying up to speed with all that is happening here.  The easiest way is to go to our website...30% is not enough participation in anything.

Congratulations to Ben Jones and Thomas Muller, our Warriors of the Week for the last two weeks.  Way to go Ben and Thomas!

We extend our best wishes and safe travels to all our area teams who will be traveling to Atlanta this weekend for the semi-finals of the state tournament.

Have a great weekend, and begin preparing for the upcoming exams.

Blessings,
Mike Notaro, Headmaster

COLLEGE COUNSELOR (Vic Spigener)

On Monday, the ninth, tenth, and eleventh grade students received their October PSAT reports.  Understanding these reports can be daunting for students (and parents); however, their English teachers have guided the students through the highlights.  So parents will know, each student has been assigned a personal code located at the very top and bottom of the report.  Using this code, the student can access his "My College QuickStart" at www.collegeboard.com/quickstart.  An outline of what this site includes is located on the back of the student's report.  Students and their parents are encouraged to take the time to examine this information - besides being free (which is quite rare for the College Board), each student can obtain the following:

  • An enhanced score report to review each test question, the student's answer, and the correct answer with explanations
  • A customized SAT study plan based on his/her PSAT performance, highlighting skills for review and practice
  • A preliminary list of colleges
  • Major and career matches compatible with his/her interests and personality

If parents or students have any questions, feel free to call Mr. Spigener.

Southwest Georgia Technical College will be offering the Alcohol and Drug Awareness class next Tuesday, 12/11, and Wednesday, 12/12, from 6pm until 8pm in A Building room #230.  There is no charge for this class. Students preparing for their driver's license must take this course before being issued a license.
