Brookwood School Mission Statement
The purpose of Brookwood School is to provide an exceptional college-preparatory educational experience to students from four years of age through the twelfth grade.  Brookwood is committed to developing the whole child:  academically, physically, spiritually, and socially.

FROM THE HEADMASTER...

Brookwood is a busy place these days.  If you had the opportunity to read last week's eNewsletter, you would have seen all the great teaching and educating that is going on by our excellent faculty.  I am very proud of the work, effort, and creative ideas they are sharing with our children.  Their dedication to their chosen field is amazing.  Please join me when you have the opportunity to say thanks or drop them an email to let them know your appreciation.

I have been told that our varsity football win over George Walton last week was one of the biggest in many years. Congratulations to Coach Boggs, the entire coaching staff, our cheerleaders, sponsors, all the volunteers, and the Brookwood community for an extra special night.  While we are on the subject...parking for our games has been a very interesting challenge.  We encourage you to be patient and arrive early if you would like to park near the athletic fields.  Remember, parking is available in the Lower School area as well as the auxiliary lot adjacent to the preschool lot.

We continue to see progress with our afternoon carpool pickup.  The past two Fridays were a bit congested because a pep rally was held and all grades (6-12) were dismissed at 3:30.

New Building Report:

Now that our slab has been poured, you will begin to see a great deal of progress being made with the new Upper School building.  Walls are beginning to rise, colors are being chosen, and a projected inventory list of needs for furnishings is in the final stages.  It is an exciting time for us all and the inconvenience that we are dealing with right now will be well worth it.  We have added some additional diagonal parking (facing the old pool area) to our original plans that will be located across the circle from Flowers Hall.  This will be a more convenient place to park when you visit the school.

Bleachers in the Gym:

The next time you visit the campus, please stop by the gym to see our new automated bleachers that were installed last week.  This project has enhanced the appearance of our gym and provided more room for our physical education classes.  With our new seating, keeping the gym and bleachers clean will be a much easier task.  We will no longer allow food or drink in the gym.  Bottled water will be permitted.  We have also added two flat screen TVs in the lunchroom that will have a direct live feed of our games. This will allow our fans to visit the concession stand and not miss any of the action.  Thank you for your support of this plan. I would like to extend a special thank you to the 2007 Auction for making our new bleachers a reality.

Volunteer and Community Service:

Tomorrow, many of our students and teachers will be participating in the Hands on Thomas County Work Day.  Last year, Brookwood volunteers out-numbered all other organizations with their participation.  We will be represented at a number of locations throughout the county with our main focus on Thomas University.  Work begins at 9:00 am.  Come out and help this very worthwhile community event.  More detailed information is at the end of this eNewsletter.

Special congratulations to Mrs. Tammy Deaver for all the volunteer work she has done with HOTC.  Mrs. Deaver was featured in the "Volunteer Spotlight" section of the September HOTC newsletter.  Way to go Mrs. Deaver, Brookwood is very proud of all you do!

See You at the Pole:

This past Wednesday morning, a good number of students, faculty, coaches, and guests gathered around our flag pole taking part in a nationally recognized event by schools.  Coach Suarez was on hand to lead the music.  This totally optional event provided an opportunity for us to publicly pray for our school, teachers, coaches, students, athletes, parents, spouses, leaders, and soldiers, to name a few.  Thanks to our FCA for their part in organizing this meaningful event.

Warrior of the Week:

Congratulations to Kyle Brown, this week's Warrior of the Week!  Way to go Kyle!

Better Behavior:

During our football game last week, I noticed a dramatic change in the behavior patterns of our students, especially the younger ones.  I am so proud of everyone's efforts in keeping an eye out for the children's wellbeing.  It is good to know that during our talks with the students, they were listening and realized the potential for harmful accidents that could occur.  Thanks to the many parents who spoke to me in favor of our efforts in making Friday nights a safer environment.  Keep up the good work!

We continue to listen and try to help make Brookwood School the best it can be.  We are definitely moving in the right direction, thanks to your support and positive attitudes.  I hope everyone has a great weekend and enjoys some quality time with your families.  Go Warriors!

Blessings,
Mike Notaro, Headmaster

Middle School Science News from Mrs. Grubbs:

Eighth grade students are studying forces.  They performed an activity on centripetal forces.  Each student used a cup with string tied through holes in the top edge of the cup and swung the cup in a circular motion.  They learned that inertia keep the water in the cup even when it was upside down.

Seventh grade completed a chapter on cell structure and the function of each of the cell's organelles.  They are presently working on models of animal of plant cells that they designed themselves.  Look for them to be displayed in the Williams-Parker Library

Please refer to this week's Middle School Announcement email that includes upcoming events and assessments as we approach the end of the first grading period.

 WILLIAMS-PARKER LIBRARY  (JACKIE CREW)

Annual Book Trade and Sale

Students in PreK through fifth grade gathered in the library Thursday morning to trade books they had "outgrown" for new ones to read.  On Friday, books not selected in the book trade went on sale.  Paperback books sold for fifty cents while any hardback book was a $1.00.  Both days offered students a chance to get some new books for the school year.  The event is held each year so do not discard those books!  Store them for our next book trade!

Scholastic Book Fair

The fair will be arriving at our library in November.   Preview day will be November 14 with sales to begin the following day and continuing through Tuesday.   Mark your calendars!

 English Department Writing  (Ann Larson)

After students get out of Lower School, parents usually do not see their English papers.  The department writing procedure involves drafting or brainstorming or setting up the paper with the teacher.  This pre-writing will vary with the teacher and the level of student.  Some teachers mark a first draft for re-writing.  Others work with the student through the draft and mark only the final paper.  Sometimes there is peer editing.  In every case the paper with marks and notes is returned to the student for a final copy.  All teachers offer ample opportunity to ask questions about the marks so that students can learn from their mistakes.  The marked drafts of these papers are kept until the beginning of the next school year.  Teachers collect final papers in a Writing Portfolio that passes from 6th grade to 12th.  As an example, the Class of 2008 has 12 papers, a term paper, and a poem from the sophomore year alone.  Seniors are given the portfolio when they graduate.
