FROM THE HEADMASTER...

This has been one of those weeks we have been looking forward to with a great deal of anticipation.  I am speaking in regards to the official visitation by the SAIS/SACS Accreditation Team.  As I have mentioned numerous times throughout this year, this is one of the most important requirements an Independent School must go through every five years.

We were blessed to have a very experienced and caring team to evaluate, make recommendations and commendations concerning our school.  The members of the team consisted of the Chairman, Dr. Bill Campbell, Headmaster from The Covenant School in Nashville Tennessee; Mrs. Melba Richardson, Academic Dean, Saint James School, Montgomery Alabama; Mrs. Tricia Guggenheim, Savannah Country Day School; Mr. Kevin Lockerbie, Headmaster, Saint's David's School, Raleigh, North Carolina; and Mrs. Margaret Conger from Tuscaloosa Academy.

The team began their work Sunday afternoon and spent each day through Tuesday's faculty meeting touring the campus, visiting classes, meeting with teachers, students, administrators, parents, and alumni.  Throughout this process they continued to compile information as well as reviewing every Standard and Indicator we responded to in our 162 page report.

As expected the team was thoroughly impressed with our wonderful school, and they will be making a unanimous recommendation to the Southern Association of Independent Schools (SAIS) and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) for renewal of accreditation.  They will also forward their official report to us in the very near future outlining the observations along with recommendations and commendations.  Once this report is received we will share the contents with all stakeholders.

We have completed another phase in our ongoing effort of improving our school.  We will now take this information and begin to develop our strategic plan and our long term goals for the future.

I must again thank our dedicated faculty, staff, students, parents, alumni, community, and Board of Directors for a superlative job in preparing our self study.  Extra special thanks goes out to Mrs. Ashley Harper for her tireless efforts in leading this yearlong project.

Lower School Town Meeting:  Lower School parents are reminded of the Town Meeting that will be held Monday at 6:30 in the Williams-Parker Library.

I had the good fortune of attending the Junior/Senior Prom last Saturday evening.  I must say this was one of the very best I have seen in quite some time.  The décor was excellent!  All our students had a great time and were extremely well behaved.  Kudos to all the juniors, chaperones, and parents for a marvelous Prom.

                                                                                       Blessings,
                                                                                       Mike Notaro

MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS (Ashley Harper)

Generation MySpace - This week the Middle School began a month long series of assemblies dedicated to Adolescent Communication.  Focusing on "Generation MySpace" we explored the information we share on Internet chat rooms and how easy it is to track people on the Internet.  In the coming week's we will discuss a series of issues related to how our students communicate today.  Please refer to the Middle School Messenger for more information and feel free to visit www.netsmartz.org for more information.

The seventh graders worked diligently on Wednesday to prepare 170 after school snack bags for the youth of Thomas County.  Working with Hands on Thomas County, the bags will be distributed to Vashti Center, Halcyon Home, and the Thomas County Food Bank. The lunch bags, decorated by our students, were filled with juice boxes, goldfish crackers, gummy snacks, and word searches, to create an inviting  treat for children in our community.  Thank you to the parents for arranging donations of the snack items and to our students for putting this worthy project together.

International Celebration

Privyet, dia dhuit, konnichiwa, bonjour, al salaam a'alaykoom, guten morgen.....

The Lower School students at all grade levels have enjoyed celebrating cultures of other countries for the past weeks. Students have researched the cultures, language, geography, and enjoyed food, music, dance, art, crafts, and many different aspects of their assigned countries. What a really fun way to learn about parts of our world and increase our understanding of different cultures.

The football field was the sight of a tremendous and festive parade this morning. All students were dressed in costume representing the countries. Later in the morning, the classes rotated through a series of activities in the classrooms. Lots of fun and information was shared. Mr. Bass and his staff prepared an international feast for lunch. Gracias!!

BROOKWOOD ATHLETICS

BASEBALL TEAM WINS REGION CHAMPIONSHIP!

To the entire Brookwood family, we are so proud of this baseball team.  They have battled through much adversity and injuries to several key players to come together as a team and realize what it takes to win a championship in the dramatic fashion in which it took place. When these Brookwood Warriors battled back from a 8-0 deficit at Tiftarea Tuesday night to win the game on a seventh inning, two run homerun off the bat of senior Lee Hopkins, it showed the HEART of true winners.

There were many exciting moments in that game that will make it one that will be remembered by those present for a long time.  A nine run third inning, a grand slam homerun by Jeb Johnson, and Ethan Howell gunning down a runner with a perfect throw to catcher Drew Balfour. Even with our defense not at it's best, senior pitcher Cory Reagin poured out his heart with another gutsy performance before giving way to Terry Chastain who did a great job for two innings. Lee Hopkins, who followed, finished the game in winning fashion for the Warriors.

These young men and coaches Jimmy Bryson and Dr. Mark Hudson are all so deserving of this region championship and the opportunity to fulfill their dream of a State Championship.  As we move forward into the playoffs next week I know that WE ARE A TEAM and it will take each player PLAYING AS A TEAM for this dream to come true. I am very proud of each one of these boys and all that they have accomplished this year. Now just focus on this GOAL and Stay the Course.

I hope that our Brookwood fans will come out and support this team as we host the first round of the state playoffs with a double header next Tuesday.
                                                                             Good Luck, Tommy McMillan

BROOKWOOD VARSITY GIRLS SOCCER CONTINUES FIGHT FOR REGION CHAMPIONSHIP

The Varsity Girls Soccer Team is fighting for the number # 1 seed in the region with Valwood. The Lady Warriors defeated Valwood in the first game of the year 3-0, but last Thursday lost to Valwood 2-1 in a heartbreaker. The Varsity Girls are now 5-2-2 and are heading to the playoffs. The girls defeated Tiftarea this week 2-1 in a hard fought match. The girls went through a tough period after spring break when they tied Sherwood Christian 2-2, lost to Sherwood 3-1 and lost to Valwood 2-1.

Kendra Bell had a great 25 yard goal against Tiftarea to give Brookwood their fifth win of the season. Haley Caldwell is improving every game as goal keeper and Logan Petrey is charging up the offense.

Senior Day is next Tuesday at home at 4:30.  Three seniors will be honored at halftime of the Georgia Christian game. The three seniors on this year's team are Sweeper Liz Brewer, Defender Kendra Bell, and Midfielder LoLo Mason. These fine players will be missed next season. They have been great players for Brookwood for a number of years. Tuesday's game against Georgia Christian is the last regular season game and last region game before the playoffs begin. Come out and show the girls how much you appreciate them.
