FROM THE HEADMASTER...

This past weekend was another landmark event for this fabulous school.  The brilliant work that Mrs. Connie Clineman has done continues to put Brookwood School in a class of its own.  Words can not describe how proud I was once again to be associated with this school and community.  "Camelot" was a superb performance by our students, parents, faculty members and volunteers.  Bravo! Bravo!

Dr. Bill Campbell, the chair of our visitation committee spent two and one-half days in Thomasville and at Brookwood preparing for the team's arrival in April.  Dr. Campbell's itinerary was quite full including dinners, church, "Camelot," and a full day observing and addressing our faculty, staff, and students.  During our faculty meeting on Monday, Dr. Campbell expressed his admiration for our town, the work we have done to this point with our self study, outlined the process to come, and his complete high regard for Brookwood School.  He also mentioned that in his many years as a Headmaster he has never seen a production that took place in "Camelot."  He was truly impressed with every aspect of our school, and our determination to continue to be the best we can be.  Over the next five years and beyond we will continue to visit our standards, and evaluate each aspect and program within our school.

Within the next few days you will be receiving some factual information we are putting together that is entitled "What Sets Brookwood School Apart?"  I believe that at times we loose sight of what we are actually doing that makes Brookwood a special place.  We will highlight our curriculum, programs, faculty, traditions, beliefs and future.  My hope is that this publication will continue to inspire us all to work positively toward keeping Brookwood a step ahead of the curve by our appreciation for the work that has been done in the past and the promise of a better future.

Our Annual Fund for Excellence is still underway.  Thanks to all who have made a contribution or commitment as shown by the 100% participation of our faculty.  If you have not yet participated, it is not too late.  Remember participation is the key to success of any campaign, and the amount given within your means is greatly appreciated.

Today Mr. Spigener introduced Kristen Wilson to the Rotary Club as this month's Student of the Month.  A deserving honor for a wonderful young lady.  Good going Kristen!

Congratulations to Liz Brewer, this week's "Warrior of the Week."  Way to go Liz!

Progress reports have been mailed to your homes. As always, I encourage you to take some time to sit with you child and discuss how they are doing in each class.  This is good time to evaluate where they are in each class and revisit your plan of study skills for the remainder of this quarter and the last.

These past few weeks have been filled with many activities and school work.  Our students for the most part have performed very well, and need to be fresh and ready for the remainder of the school year.  This long weekend is coming at a very good time for all to recharge their batteries and hit the ground running in the spring.  Enjoy this time together as we prepare for an important turn toward the finish line for this year.  Blessings to you all!

                                                                                 Blessings,

                                                                                 Mike Notaro

MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS (Ashley Harper)

Mrs. Phipp's sixth grade classroom was recently transformed into a coffeehouse for the poetry presentations of her students.  Complete with cozy chairs, cappuccino, and a new found love of poetry, the sixth graders worked to express their knowledge and celebrate their presentations.  Each student chose a poet to study and emulate for the assignment.  On poetry day, they recited memorized works to one another, shared biographies of their poets, and shared poetry they had written in the style of their poet.

Thank you to Mrs. Phipps and the sixth grade for this innovative expression of knowledge.

We would like to extend a special thanks to Mrs. Julie Myers, Director of Marketing at Archbold Memorial Medical Center and Emily Myer's mom, for arranging a phenomenal field trip to the hospital today.  Our eighth grade science students bolstered their learning by touring many of the hospital's state of the art facilities, including the Gamma Knife and the Cath Lab.  Please look for an article in next week's newsletter describing this special day.  Thank you to Mrs. Grubb's for seeking this fantastic opportunity.

Congratulations to our Middle School Girl's Basketball Team, the Region 3AA Champions.  The Middle School girls basketball team led by Haley Caldwell, Paige Petrey, and Hannah Notaro, won the Region 3 AA Title defeating Tiftarea (41-26) in the Semi-Finals and Randolph Southern(33-31) in the championship game held at Valwood School in Valdosta. The Brookwood girls were favored going into the tournament on Saturday, February 3rd, after an undefeated season in the region and 13-1 overall.

LOWER SCHOOL NEWS (Francine Wright)

Grandparent's/Special Friends Day

Beautiful faces and gleaming eyes beamed out at an audience of grandparents, special friends, and parents in Chubb Hall this morning.  The Kindergartners sang songs, recited poems, and shared "Knock Knock" jokes with their loved ones.  Words of love included "Bushel and a Peck," "The Love Bug," "You Make Me Smile," and many others.

More than a bushel of appreciation goes to Mrs. Lee, Mrs. Martin, Mrs. Waters, Mrs. Rish, and Mrs. Wilson. And of course, we thank all of our grandparents, special friends, and parents for sharing these wonderful sweethearts.  After the program the Kindergartners took their special guests to the pre-school building to enjoy refreshments and receive special surprises.  It was a day of celebration and time together.  Everyone received special Valentine photos.

A special thank you to Suzanne Dixon and her committee for welcoming our Grandparents and Special Friends with a lovely reception.

Middle School Girls Basketball Team WINS REGION

The Middle School Girls Basketball Team, led by eighth graders Haley Caldwell and Paige Petrey and seventh grader Hannah Notaro, won the Region 3 AA Title at Valwood defeating Tiftarea(41-26) in the Semi-Finals and Randolph Southern(33-31) in the championship game. The Brookwood girls were the favorite going into the Tournament on Saturday, February 3, after going undefeated in the Region and 13-1 overall. The girls got the bye and did not have to play till 2 pm vs the Valwood-Tiftarea winner. The girls started out the game with a 12-3 run and never looked back. The Lady Warriors were led by Hannah Notaro who hit 3 or 4 three pointers and three of nine 2's for a team high 15 points. She also had 10 rebounds. Page Petrey has 14 points shooting 7 for 14 from the floor and had six big steals. Haley Calwell had 6 pts and 10 rebounds and Grace Allen added 8 rebounds. This set up the championship game vs Randolph Southern who had defeated SGA 28-20 in a 9 AM game at Valwood. Coach Hogan knew this game was going to be a tough one since the Lady Warriors had only beaten the Randolph Southern girls 45-39 in Brookwood's gym a few weeks before. The Lady Warriors were out to prove him wrong when they jumped out to a 24-12 halftime led. Coach Hogan knew the RS #30 had scored 24 pts against Brookwood in the earlier game and put his two best defenders on her. Paige took her man to man the first quarter and Brittany Vinson took her the 2nd quarter and the two of them held her to just 2 ppoints the first half. Coach Hogan told the girls at halftime that the Randolph Southern team would make a run and in the third quarter, they did just that, outscoring Brookwood 8-2 in the third. The score at the end of three quarters was 26-20, a much closer game. The girls held on in the fourth quarter and came away with a hard fought 33-31 victory and the first Region Championship for a Brookwood Middle School Girls Team. Again, the Lady Warriors were led by Hannah Notaro who had 15 pts and 13 rebounds. Haley Calwell also had a great game with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Grace Allen had six blocked shots when Brookwood really needed her to step up. Paige came through with 6 steals and 5 points. Payton Patterson had to play tough in the first half when Brittany got in foul trouble. She did a great job under pressure of a championship game. Coach is also very pleased with the hard work and the play of the team this year. We lose six great 8th graders but the future looks good with the play of Hannah, Peyton, Leigh Avera, Caroline Penhallegon, Brennan Horner, Krysta Heirs, Garland Turner, Emily Hancock, Jessi Hurst, Elin McGregor and Elizabeth Johnson. Coach Hogan says that these girls are a joy to coach with their enthusiasm and hustle.  If these girls continue to improve we will be after another Region Championship in 2008.
