FROM THE HEADMASTER...

There has been a great deal of activity this week as we approach opening night this evening for "Camelot."  I know we all will enjoy and appreciate the tremendous talent we are fortunate to have here at Brookwood.  My congratulations in advance to Mrs. Clineman for another exceptional performance.  Her leadership and ability to bring so many talents together is remarkable.  We are all so very proud and grateful to the many cast members, crew, parents and volunteers who set Brookwood apart from any other school.

Throughout this weekend and all day Monday, Dr. Bill Campbell, Chairman of our Visitation Team, will be here to do his preliminary SAIS/SACS accreditation visit.  We look forward to his arrival and are excited to have him learn about this remarkable school.  I am personally thrilled to be able to share Brookwood with the person who brought me into the independent school business and has been my mentor.  If the opportunity presents itself, please introduce yourself and give a warm Brookwood welcome to Dr. Campbell.

Mr. Lou Langlais, uncle of Ty Autry spoke to our Middle and Upper School this morning.  Mr. Langlais has been a military SEAL for almost 20 years, serving four tours in Afghanistan and two in Iraq.  After a brief introduction excellent questions were asked by our students and answered in detail by Mr. Langlais.  He gave a brief description of what it was like to go through the difficult training, described some of his missions, and expressed how proud he was to serve our country.  We are grateful to Mr. Langlais and all our military personnel around the world.

Speaking of our troops, two weeks ago each of our students (K-12) wrote a letter to a soldier in Iraq expressing their appreciation, told a little about themselves and what was happening at Brookwood.  In conjunction with Hands on Thomas County, we were able to forward these heart warming messages to 450 soldiers.  Thanks to our students and teachers for this thoughtful project. I know their words of appreciation will be warmly welcomed.

Last week I had the pleasure of introducing Lisa Coward as the Exchange Club "Student of the Month." This week two more of our students were recognized by the Kiwanis Club.  Congratulations to Keri McMillan and Katherine Wolff, both well deserving of this recognition.

Congratulations to Ethan Vinson this week's "Warrior of the Week."  Way to go Ethan!

This is a very busy time of the year for us all, but we should never be too busy to let the people around us, especially our family, know how very much we appreciate and love them.  You all are so much appreciated.  "Break a leg!"

                                                                                 Blessings,

                                                                                  Mike Notaro

"CAMELOT"

Join Brookwood School and Director Constance Clineman as they present this year's musical production, Camelot.  Over one-fourth of our student body is involved and many others from the Brookwood community.

Everyone will have a chance to see and applaud  the performances this weekend, but we want to emphasize how much we owe to all of those who have worked behind the scenes for many months to bring this dream to fruition.  From publicity to gathering props to building the set to designing and sewing costumes, students, parents and staff have pitched in with many hours of service that has all been given in a cheerful and supportive manner.  In
Constance Clineman we have a director who can direct and inspire our students to marvelous performances.  She would be the first to acknowledge that she could not work her miracles without help from others.  Today, we thank and applaud all of you who have done so much to bring us to this moment.  Thank you; and to all the performers, "break a leg."

Performances will be held at the Thomasville Municipal Auditorium.  Ticket will be on sale at the Municipal Auditorium before the show begins.

General Admission  $12.00 per ticket (adults), $5.00 per ticket (students)

Performance times are:
Friday, February 2, 8:00 p.m.
Saturday, February 3, 8:00 p.m.
Sunday, February 4, 2:00 p.m.

MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS (Ashley Harper)

Mrs. Grubb's science classes have been busy lately!  The innovative hands-on applications she assigns create lasting impressions for our students.  The seventh graders have completed studying the unit on cells and basic organisms.  Students chose from animal cells, plant cells, and single celled organisms such as paramecium, euglena, bacteria, and amoeba cells to construct their own model of cells.  Please visit the Williams-Parker Library in the next two weeks to see their fantastic displays.

The eighth grade science classes look forward to an off campus extension of their learning on Thursday.  Special thanks to Mrs. Julie Myers for arranging a great day of application for our students.  The eighth grade has been studying radiation therapy as a part of their current unit and will have the opportunity to tour the hospital and speak with health care professionals in all areas.  Please see the permission slip below for our eighth grade students.

Congratulations to Katherine Wolff, the Kiwanis Middle School Student of the Month.  Katherine was honored at a luncheon today at the Plaza.  We are proud of her and her contributions to Brookwood and the community.

Thank you to Lou Langlais, Ty Autry's uncle, for speaking at assembly this morning.  As a Navy SEAL, Lou shared some of his experiences in Afghanistan and Iraq.  His unique and hands on perspective of the conflict in the Middle East was intriguing.  We appreciate his time this morning and are thankful for his service to our country.

ATHLETICS

Our Middle School Boys and Girls Basketball teams will be competing tomorrow in their respective regional tournament at Valwood.  Our boys have improved throughout the season and have worked very hard under the super leadership of Coach East.  Our girls will be entering the tournament as the number one seed with their impressive record of 12-1.  Coach Hogan as well has done a great job in teaching our girls the fundamentals necessary to succeed.  We wish both teams good luck and safe travel.

Brookwood School will be hosting the Boys and Girls Regional Tournament, February 13-16.  We will publish the tournament brackets as soon as seating is complete.  Please make plans to come out and support our Warriors.  This will be a large undertaking by our faculty and staff.  If you wish to volunteer your time and work during the tournament, please contact the front office for details.

SENIOR NIGHT FOR OUR BASKETBALL PLAYERS WILL BE TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 6.

 27th ANNUAL BROOKWOOD AUCTION - MARCH 10

Brookwood Goes Broadway!

The 27th Brookwood Auction is right around the corner! Your invitation will be mailed out next week, so please be on the lookout for these in the mail! Remember that seating is limited, so it is best to return the reply card as soon as you can. As has been mentioned, the format has slightly changed this year. A Chinese Auction will be taking the place of the Silent Auction. This means there will be seven  tables with theme names that will have 12-14 items on them. With your reservation, you will receive three raffle tickets per person that you may put in a bowl at any of the tables. Raffle tickets will also be available for anyone to purchase, and you don't have to be present to win. These will be available ahead of time at the school, as well as the evening of the Auction. During the evening, a winning ticket will be pulled from each bowl from the seven tables and the winner takes the whole table!! The Auction Committee has worked really hard and we feel you will be pleasantly surprised at this new format. The Almost Live and Live Auction will have the same format as usual. These committees have worked hard as well, and they have some new and exciting items and trips for you! Let's all remember what is  most important, this Fundraiser helps to provide wonderful things  for our school and our children! Thank you for your support!!

BROOKWOOD BASEBALL CLINIC A HUGE SUCCESS

Saturday, January 27th was a busy day on the Brookwood baseball field.  Head Brookwood Coach Tommy McMillan and many other talented professionals led a large group of young baseball players on a journey filled with helpful hints and fundamentals of hitting, fielding, pitching, running bases, throwing, and catching.  Not only were these young men drilled on the field but they were also given life lessons by Mr. Denny Williams, a former FSU baseball player and current Coordinator of "Good Kid" Susce Baseball Camps, in a presentation on sportsmanship, leadership, home gun safety, and stamping out substance abuse in our communities.  Lieutenant Williams has been with the Richmond, Virginia police force for over twenty-eight years. A special thanks goes out to our own Steve Jones from the Thomasville Sheriff's Department for his contribution to the program.

On the field, we had a wealth of talented teachers of the game of baseball.  These friends traveled from as far away as Miami, Florida and Richmond, Virginia to enjoy the southern hospitality and to work with our young men on the baseball field. My hope is that our players will remember some of what they were taught and put it to work on the practice field so that when the season begins their confidence level will increase as their fundamentals continue to improve.  As coaches at Brookwood, we will continue to work hard on the fundamental skills of the game as well as teamwork, sportsmanship, and positive attitude.

A special thanks goes to Larry Bryant, Randy Gailey, Denny Williams, Tim Sherrill, Ken Doria , John LiBrandi, Bill Mormile, Jim Miksis, and our own Brookwood coaching staff of Tommy McMillan, Jimmy Bryson , Mark Hudson, and Joe Simpson.  Hopefully, we can continue to involve our local youth in events such as this baseball clinic throughout the years.

We could not have done any of this without the help of all of the parents and the Booster Club that gave of their time to help in the concession stand and on the field.

Thanks to all for a successful baseball clinic.
