FROM THE HEADMASTER...TOWN MEETING ON MONDAY, OCTOBER 9, AT 6:30 P.M., WILLIAMS-PARKER LIBRARY - JOIN US!

Our school's faculty, students, coaches, staff, and parents continue to amaze me!  How blessed we are to have such a wonderful place to educate and raise our children.

This week has been filled with one great event after another, beginning with last Saturday's community service event for Hands On Thomas County.  I was proud to be a part of the turnout and work ethic our students and parents exhibited.  Brookwood was represented at numerous locations throughout the county.  Please read through this entire report to get a better feel for all that was accomplished Saturday.

Monday morning during assembly I had the pleasure to recognize Kate Worthey for being named a Commended Student in the 2007 National Merit Scholarship program.  Kate has placed among the top five percent of more than 1.4 million students who entered the 2007 competition by taking the 2005 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.  Kate has demonstrated exceptional academic promise by her outstanding performance on this qualifying test.  Join me in congratulating Kate and her parents Mr. and Mrs. Mark Worthey for this terrific recognition.

Softball Seniors were recognized prior to their last home game Tuesday.  Parents escorted Anne McPherson, Keri McMillan, Liz Brewer, Kendra Bell, and Eve Toomey.  Flowers and balloons were presented as a brief bio was read over the public address system.  After a sound victory, these five seniors took their ceremonial last jog around the base path.

Another great sign of respect that truly moved me took place as the ceremony began.   I watched our football team stop practice and gather in the bleachers to lend their support to these seniors.  My compliments to Coach Shane Boggs, Athletic Director Tony Rogers, and the football players for this classy and professional gesture.

National Honor Society Inductions took place Wednesday morning in Chubb Hall.  Students speeches were filled with profound remarks such as, "make tough choices for excellence," "become a scholar for life," "choose the difficult path," "be a leader," and to take advantage of "the many opportunities to serve."  This Brookwood tradition shines brighter than any event this Headmaster has seen.  Mrs. Larson's dedication, loyalty, and attention to detail in this highly respected tapping ceremony is beyond reproach.  We are blessed again!

Read more on the National Honor Society Inductions in Mr. Grooms' Upper School report.

Warrior of the Week for 9/25 was Anne Sexton, and this week was Lee Hopkins.

Congratulations to these great Warriors!

We have now completed the first eight weeks of the school year and I am not sure where those weeks have gone.  The end of the first grading period is now upon us and for those of you who tend to procrastinate, the time is now!  Please encourage your children to stick to the task at hand, stay focused, be conscious of time, and plan ahead.

Quotable Quote:

"There is nothing quite as potent as a focused life, one lived on purpose.  The men and women who have made the greatest difference in history were the most focused."  (Rick Warren, author of the NY Times best Seller, The Purpose Driven Life, p. 32)

What is your purpose in life?  Be sure to let your children know how much you love them this weekend!

UPPER SCHOOL NEWS (David Grooms)

***NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY TAPPING CEREMONY***

The 35th tapping ceremony of Brookwood School's National Honor Society took place Wednesday in Chubb Hall.  The chapter, named for Louise Jeanes Hines, a founder who was a determining influence on Brookwood's focus on excellence, tapped several new membersCurrent NHS members were in charge of the candlelight ceremony.  These included Crighton Allen, Kate Worthey, Elizabeth Wedding, Mary Catherine Alexander, Anne McPherson, Kristen Wilson, Amanda Quinton (transfer), William Lee, Laurel Derby, Marielle Youmans, Jonathan Wood, and Stormy Koch (transfer).

New members tapped were Lisa Coward, Ethan Howell, Eve Toomey, Jacob Lewis, Anne Sexton, Robby Stubley, Lauren Hancock, Tom Danner, Grant Stauffer, Keri McMillan, Ellen Stauffer, Christy McMillan, Kelly Jackson, Margaret Singletary, Thomas Muller, Kendra Bell, Haven Shea, Sara Jo Grooms, Charles Scott, Lucy Mitchell, Jon Johnson, Ashley Laramore, Victoria Bufford, Chase Clayton, Tom Shaw, Ben Jones and Ashton Thomas.

Faculty tap new members with a gold NHS key, some dating from 1973, which they place around the student's neck.  Parents view the tapping of their child by video, then they enter the room, accompanied by siblings, grandparents, and friends. All members of the NHS attended a luncheon hosted by Brookwood NHS alumna Charnie Beverly.  Thanks to Mrs. Larson for serving as sponsor for the National Honor Society and to the many faculty and staff who worked diligently to make the ceremony a success.

Wednesday, October 11th - Science, Ethics (8), Math Comp (7), and Spanish (6)

The sixth graders visited the
Challenger Learning Center and IMAX in Tallahassee on Tuesday to take a journey to the Moon this week.  The students prepared for their mission by spending a week of intensive training learning about the Moon.  Some of the things they studied were:  The Moon was once active with volcanoes, due to the lack of wind and water there is no weathering so the footprints of Neil Armstrong from 30 years ago still remain on the Moon, Moon temperatures range from -173 C to 100 C, pull of gravity is one sixth as strong as the pull of gravity on Earth and yes the Moon has a tail.  Their mission was very successful at Mission Control and aboard the space shuttle.  They worked diligently at their jobs taking blood pressure, determining the mass of moon rocks, assembling the space probe, and plotting coordinates for a safe landing on the surface of the Moon.  After the mission they enjoyed the night sky planetarium, an IMAX movie on assembling of the probes that visited Mars, and a wonderful movie on the endangered pandas of China. They were wonderful!!  Thank you to Mrs. Bird and Mrs. Grubbs for leading the mission.

LOWER SCHOOL NEWS (Francine Wright)

BEBOP WITH AESOP

Chubb Hall was full of song and laughter as we bebopped with Aesop's animal and human friends.  Mrs. Cheney's fourth grade class stimulated our imaginations through many delightful stories and musical accompaniments.

Aesop's fables, through everyday experiences, teach our children positive values and behavior.  We learned that 'slow and steady wins the race' from The Tortoise and the Hare, and The Boy Who Cried Wolf taught us the valuable lesson of always telling the truth.

Don't Count Your Chickens Before They Hatch, Don't Put Off Until Tomorrow What You Can Do Today, and Look Before You Leap are other good notes of wisdom from the fourth graders.

Great job from all the ever wiser fourth graders!!

Thank you Mrs. Cheney for sharing your student's creative abilities through this entertaining production.  Thank you to Mrs. Lee for your musical direction, and to all the parents who gave their time to help with the costumes, props and program for this play.

DEEP SOUTH FAIR

The 2006 Deep South Fair will be held at the Thomasville Fairgrounds from October 10-14.  Artwork from students in Prekindergarten through fifth grade will be on display.  This year, the art display will be held in the building on the right, along with the commercial displays.  This will ensure that all visitors to the fair will see the wonderful art the children produce, as everyone has to enter through that building.

Congratulations to the following students whose artwork was submitted to the Deep South Fair this year:

SPECIAL REPORT FROM THE HEADMASTER: We have placed a special emphasis this year on the word "Service."  The following reports are examples of how our students are accepting the challenge of providing assistance to others.

Last Saturday our students, faculty, parents, brothers and sisters took part in the Hands On Thomas County community wide volunteer day.  I must say I was truly impressed with Brookwood's turn out at numerous locations throughout the county.  Brookwood by far had the most participants from any one organization with a total well over 130 students, teachers, parents and Board members.  I would like to share with you some of the great work our people took part in.  With their permission I will copy the reports received from some of our faculty.

Tammy Deaver, Pre-Kindergarten:
I had the privilege and honor of volunteering at Georgia Southwestern Hospital on Saturday for HOTC.  I was Team Leader for our church, Countryside Community Church in Ochlocknee, Ga.  Our team of volunteers interacted with the residents and assisted with making and decorating musical instruments, which we used later in a praise and jam session.  On our volunteer team I had 5 Brookwood students:  Sydni Barwick, Abrey Haines, Hannah Deaver, Kennedy Deaver, and Maggie Deaver.  I was so impressed with how these young ladies interacted with the residents.  Since it was such a beautiful day, each volunteer took a resident on a stroll around the facility, which entailed pushing them in a wheel chair and having a one on one opportunity to visit.  Many of our residents could not speak, but the smiles on their faces were worth a million words. We went there to be a blessing but we were the ones who were blessed.  This was my second year being involved with HOTC Day but definitely not my last.  It was so wonderful to see so many Brookwood families represented on HOTC Day.  It truly shows the heart of our Brookwood family.  I feel blessed to be a part of such a terrific family and community.  Jo Ann Bell and Susan Harvard are to be commended for their excellent job of organization and long hours of service to this project.  I highly recommend the summer program that they do for young people, "Project Impact." Brookwood was well represented at this program this summer.

Susan Waters, Kindergarten:
From pulling weeds and picking up trash, to pouring sand over stepping stones, kindergartners were full of smiles and enthusiasm!  We all had a good time knowing we were helping our community, and we're looking forward to keeping up the tradition!

Barbara Lee, Music:
My job Saturday was to answer the phones at the Hands On Thomas County office for JoAnn Bell and Susan Harvard.  Last year they left the office unmanned, and when they returned later on Saturday, found that they had several messages from people needing to know where their group was meeting, what to bring, etc.  This year I was in their office to answer those calls - and there were several, some were Brookwood people!

Jenny Ladson, Study Lab:
Four Brookwood students (Hill, Anne Scott, Simms and Will), Robyn Enright, the Turners and the Ladsons helped at the Humane Society. This group washed dogs, socialized kittens, landscaped the front of the shelter and painted the inside of the facility.

Mike Notaro, Headmaster:
Led by team leaders Coach Johnson and Mr. Spigener, our group worked hard and without complaining until the task of digging holes for ½ mile of stepping stones, weeding the two playground areas, cleaning the shelter, removing fencing, trimming bushes and hedges, and spreading pine straw was complete.  Mrs. Waters and Mrs. Martin both had their students helping with all the chores.  Middle School Director, Mrs. Harper was on hand, Mrs. Simpson with her family, and many parents and family members contributed as well.  I want to make note that numerous football players, cheerleaders, parents and fans were present after arriving home from Panama City at 2:30 that morning!  I am very proud of all our great people at Brookwood.

Maureen Harrer, Art:
The following children accompanied me to Hands and Hearts for Horses: Peyton, Taylor, Abby Patterson; Madeleine, William and Ellie Harrer; Hunter Avera and Eleanor Stubley. We had a great time landscaping, cleaning the barn and painting.

Ann Vereen, Spanish:
I am on the HOTC Board and was a team leader at the Thomas Grady Service Center, a nonprofit that provides work and life skills to mentally retarded adults. We painted a huge activity room. My husband worked at my site and my two children did a project for foster children.  I think Brookwood folks could easily handle two sites next year. It was great to see so many of our folks out there.

Natalie Braswell, Pre-Kindergarten:
I worked at the Thomasville Museum of History with my daughter Brooke, Robert and Alston Watt. Brooke was asked to draw up a landscape plan for a cottage on the grounds there. The plants had to be period appropriate from the late 1800s to the early 1900s. We planted the shrubs, flowers and herbs and put brick boarders around the beds. We had a great time!

Brookwood School is a very special family that truly cares about others.  I applaud all members of the Brookwood community, Jo Ann Bell, Alston Watt and all of Thomasville as well.  Congratulations on a great event!

Special Thanks from Hands On Thomas County...
Thank you for your wonderful support for a very successful Hands On Thomas County Day last Saturday.   Brookwood students and families were spread though out Thomasville for this day of volunteering.  Balfour Park had an overwhelming 88 Brookwood volunteers! Thanks to your help, HOTC enjoyed a successful day with an excess of 1000 volunteers.  Thanks Brookwood for making Thomasville an even better place to live!  Jo Ann Bell
