FROM THE HEADMASTER...

We have completed yet another great week here at Brookwood.  It seems as though the school year is moving very quickly with activities happening every day.

I had the pleasure of attending one of the most meaningful ceremonies I have seen in quite sometime on Wednesday.  Our "Senior Buddy" mixer was a very moving experience for this Headmaster to witness.  The joy on the faces of not only our first graders but our seniors was wonderful.  We are again fortunate to have yet another great tradition.

I hope that you enjoyed our last eNewsletter that contained additional information from other divisions within the school.  We would appreciate any feedback and would love to include any other information that you believe would be helpful.  We will continue to pass along as much information to you as possible in the future. Please be sure that you continue to read all the way through this report.

Our faculty and staff are doing a great job with keeping to the task every single day providing an exceptional education to our children.  They are also spending time preparing and fulfilling there requirements for the upcoming dual SACS/SAIS accreditation visit this spring.  This is a huge task that will require many extra hours in addition to their already busy schedules.  We are well on our way to completing the first phase of the study.  We will provide you with some particulars next week.

With the anticipation of the first home football game, the atmosphere on campus yesterday (Thursday) was electrifying!  We enjoyed a very spirited pep rally and were then treated to an exceptional game.  I witnessed a true Brookwood happening by being a spectator, and can say  without reservation it was the largest crowd I have ever seen at a Brookwood football game!  J Our players, cheerleaders, coaches and fans did a fantastic job in showing their "passionate pride."  I would also like to pass on a special word of gratitude to our Booster Club volunteers for their dedication and hard work that made this opening night a huge success.  Congratulations to President Steve Kinsey for leading this great support group.

Brookwood football is a wonderful way to come out and enjoy a family evening as well as a great time to visit with other members of our community.  Please be mindful of areas in which we do not want children to be during the game.  We ask that you speak with your child about staying within the football stadium confines.  We do not allow children to wonder or play in the parking lots, other athletic areas such as the baseball or softball fields or bleachers, in or around the school, and the lower school playground.  With your help we can be sure to continue to provide our children a safe environment during home games.

From time to time issues may arise that will require you to communicate with a teacher, administrator or myself.  Please be mindful of our policies and procedures concerning "Resolving Problems."  I ask that you take a brief moment to review the policy as stated on page 65 in the Blue Book prior to making contact with certain individuals.  Thank you in advance for following the protocol when dealing with issues of concern.

We have scheduled a "Town Meeting' along with the Parent Council on September 11, beginning at 6:30 pm in the Williams-Parker Library.  Please make plans to attend this open forum to discuss positive topics that will continue to help Brookwood meet our needs and dreams.  We previously indicated that for this evening child care would be provided, I am sorry to say that we will not be able to provide this service.  Please make arrangements on your own so that we will be able to conduct an adult attended meeting.  Thank you for understanding.

DANGEROUS INTERSECTION

Parents and students are urged to use extreme caution when approaching the intersection of Hwy. 319 and Tall Pines Drive.  We have had numerous reports the last several weeks of large trucks running the red light as they travel on Hwy. 319.  Please look in both directions and proceed with caution before entering and exiting the subdivision.  We thank you for maintaining a safe speed as we travel through our neighbor's streets.

As you are aware Labor Day is a public holiday that is held in honor of working people throughout this great country.  I wish each teacher, staff member, parent and child a well deserved break.  Have a great weekend with your family!

                                                                                                Blessings to all,

                                                                                                Mike Notaro

UPPER SCHOOL NEWS (David Grooms)

Auditions for this year's musical, Camelot, are scheduled for September 9th.  We will begin with the youngest actors from 9:00 a.m. until 9:30 a.m.  This group will consist of students in Pre-Kindergarten through the 2nd grade.  Lower School actors in grades 3 - 5 will audition from 9:30 a.m. - 10:00 a.m.  Individual actors from Middle School to adults will be given times in 5 minute increments beginning after the Lower School.  Mrs. Beeson or one of her assistants will begin calling in the near future with times for those actors who have completed an audition form.  Actors who have not completed a form prior the completion of the schedule will be asked to come at the end of the assigned times and wait for an opportunity to audition.

One Act auditions will be after school on September 8th.

The Seniors and a few Juniors met their Buddies in the First Grade this week.  The mixer was an opportunity for the older and younger students to get to know one another.

MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS (Ashley Harper)

Celebration abounded in the Middle School today.  After we cheered the varsity football team onto victory last night with a fantastic crowd of Middle School students and faculty, we celebrated our own successes today.

This afternoon at 2:50 pm, we gathered as a Middle School student body to enjoy a refreshing Hawaii Snow.  The students were surprised and pleased by this special treat to celebrate our fantastic three weeks of school.

The faculty is proud of our students and their commitment to excellence.  The dedication to working hard in class, being good citizens on campus, and creating a climate of respect throughout our school is much appreciated.

This week the sixth graders practiced their writing prowess as Mrs. Phipp's writer's workshop began.  Be on the look out for some outstanding publications from this talented group.

The seventh grade would like to thank Mrs. Lewis, Mrs. Avera, Mrs. Murray, Mrs. Folsom, and Mrs. Notaro for hosting a "rumble" as the Greasers and the Socs celebrated S.E. Hinton's The Outsiders today.

The first of the eighth grade feature articles appears in today's Middle School Newsletter.  Thank you to Haley Caldwell and Paige Petrey for a wonderful article about our Middle School Softball team.  Thank Mrs. Lewis for leading this fantastic Middle School leadership opportunity.

LOWER SCHOOL NEWS (Francine Wright)

Step It Up!  Step It Up!  Time to order magazines!

The 2006 fall magazine sale was set in motion as the students listened to Magazine Man tell them all about  the awesome prizes that they can win.  Skittles, M&Ms, and their favorite Airheads are daily turn-in treats for each order they bring in.  CD players, lighted CD holders, and lighted illusion clocks are just some of the "Level Prizes" - the more you sell, the more you earn!

Each class will be working to earn that huge chocolate bar.  Each student in grades 1-5 is asked to sell ten magazine subscriptions; students in Pre-K and kindergarten are asked to sell five.  Parents, grandparents, and friends - we need your help.  The big goal is $50,000.  Once again, the reward for the lower school students will be Mr. Bass's scrumptious cookout followed by ice cream sundaes.

Please remember in accordance with accreditation regulations, students are not allowed to go door-to-door.

Good Luck Lower School Warriors!    Sell!  Sell!  Sell!

COLLEGE COUNSELING OFFICE (Vic Spigener)

(1)     Senior students and parents who have not met with Mr. Spigener need to do so as soon as possible.

(2)     All seniors should be filling out college applications; they are all due to Mr. Spigener by October 31 (regardless of the actual deadline the college/university sets)

(3)     The ONLY exceptions to this are applications for Early Decision and Early Action.  These deadlines are due two weeks BEFORE the date set by the institution.

(4)     For students applying Early Action to UGA, Part I of the application is due October 15 (which means that Part I is due to Mr. Spigener by the end of September).  Students are reminded that if their Early Action application is denied, that's it!  Students are also reminded that if they and Mr. Spigener feel their applications will be deferred, they need to go ahead and complete Part II of the application by Mr. Spigener's October 31 deadline.

(5)     Student athletes need to go on-line and register with the NCAA Clearinghouse - there is also a $50 registration fee.  They also need to print out the transcript release form, sign it, get their parents to sign, and give the form to Mr. Spigener as soon as possible.

(6)     The deadline for the October 14 SAT is September 12.

(7)     The deadline for the October 28 ACT is September 22.

(8)     All seniors and juniors are reminded that the Woodward Academy College Fair is Sunday, September 17 at 2:00 - 4:00 pm.  Mr. Spigener will have a list of the schools attending (a few days before the fair) as well as a valuable handout "Fairing Well at College Fairs" available.

(9)     Sophomores and juniors (and their parents) need to mark Sunday, February 11, 2007, 12:00 - 4:00 pm on their calendars.  This is the date of the National College Fair at the Georgia International Convention Center in Atlanta.  There will be additional information sent later.

(10) The University of the South (Sewanee) will be at Brookwood on Friday, September 29 at 2:20 to talk to interested students.

(11) Mr. Spigener has a very valuable publication "Paying for Your College Education" put out by Bank of America.  Parents and students should feel free to come pick one up.

(12) Mr. Spigener also has a great deal of scholarship information in his office.  PARENTS ARE REMINDED THAT THEY SHOULD NEVER PAY ANYONE FOR A SCHOLARSHIP SEARCH!

(13) Mr. Spigener has Brookwood's access code for the Online SAT course.  Students should come by Mr. Spigener's office to get it.

ATHLETICS (Tony Rogers)

Brookwood 48-- Fullington 34
Thanks for coming out to support the football team this past Thursday night. Our game against Fullington Academy was an exciting contest. Congratulations Coach Boggs and the football team on the win. Coach Boggs said it best after the game by describing it as a total team effort. It has been a great beginning.

Great Start

Our entire athletic program is off to a great start.  It began last June with the attendance of our student-athletes to the Bigger-Faster-Stronger Clinic and it continued through the rest of the summer as our athletes revealed their commitment to their fall sport.  The Booster Club is going strong, our coaches are getting the best out of our opportunities, and our athletes are getting better every day.  Let's continue to stay positive throughout the year; we definately have reason to be thankful.

GRANT STAUFFER - CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPION     (Coach Rogers)

For the past two years, we have grown accustomed to hearing about senior Grant Stauffer's Cross Country success. He is the two-time defending Cross Country state champion.  Grant's aspirations for running this year have been two-fold. First, he has sought to break the 17-minute barrier; Wednesday he ran
17:08. Grant is very close to accomplishing this goal. Second, he has wanted to defeat the two best runners in the state from First Presbyterian Day School in Macon

On Wednesday, Grant attended The Stratford Invitational, which draws the best runners in the state. Over 150 runners competed on a grueling course. Grant started out with the top runners, which included the athletes from First Presbyterian Day, and stayed perched on top of the leader board throughout the race. Somewhere in the middle of the race, Grant tripped and fell, losing critical time. Never had he been able to defeat the two guys from First Presbyterian Day, and this was his last chance to accomplish this seemingly impossible goal. Grant continued to push his body as hard as he could.

Coach Debbie Beeson described the end of the event as the most exciting achievement she had seen in quite some time. As Grant approached the finish line, he and the runner from First Presbyterian Day were running side-by-side.  As they crossed the line, the Brookwood senior stuck his chest out, while the runner from First Presbyterian Day dove across the finish line for a photo finish. After reviewing the photo finish, Grant was declared the first place winner!

Brookwood is proud of Grant, and we congratulate him on this spectacular win!
