FROM THE HEADMASTER...
Have you ever been told something important from a friend or colleague that was just the greatest news and you could not wait to tell somebody? A similar situation occurred with us here at Brookwood over the past couple of weeks. We knew that good things were happening in many ways but could not tell anyone until we opened the doors this past Tuesday. As I hope you know by now, Brookwood reached a milestone that had never been reached in the thirty-six year history of the school. Because of your commitment to providing your child the best education possible, because you have confidence in this exceptional faculty, and because you love the caring family atmosphere that Brookwood has so long provided...we all have set a new enrollment record of 477 students!
Brookwood School is thriving because of the loyalty of our families and the positive ambassadorship that has been provided by you throughout this community! I extend my most sincere thanks to you all for believing in us, and entrusting this faculty and staff with your most precious possessions. We all can now shout it out!
More good news concerning our Advanced Placement (AP) results that we received the later part of the summer: For the 2005-2006 academic year Brookwood School had 27 students take a total of 42 AP exams. On those exams 76% or 32 of the 42 scores were 4 or 5 on a 5 point scale! 95% or 40 of the 42 were 3 or above. As most of you know many colleges will grant college credit to students who receive a 3 or better on these exams, the higher the score the more college credit you can receive. We are so very proud of these students, all the teachers who have taught them throughout their years, and especially those teachers who led the final charge across the finish line: Mrs. Larson, Mr. Grooms, Mrs. Sheftall, and Mr. Massey. Congratulations to everyone for more than a job well done!
I am sure you have noticed the obvious change in the appearance of our campus. Thanks to our Board of Directors and Trustees, we have successfully completed the first major phase of our refurbishing project. This work has been overdue and we are so very proud of our fresh look. I am sure everyone will take pride in the appearance of our facilities and will make a special effort to help us maintain it in the future.
Our eNewsletter next week will provide you with some additional information. We will be including brief reports from the Upper, Middle, and Lower Schools, as well as reports from athletics and the College Counselor. Although you may only have a child in one division, I think it is important that you are aware of all that is happening here at Brookwood.
I would like to give thanks and much credit to the exceptional support staff we have here at Brookwood. We are blessed to have such hard working and dedicated people in Karla George, Vicky Bryson, Karen Holt, Melissa Breese, Becca Bird, David Grooms, Francine Wright, Ashley Harper and Jimmy Sadler. Each, as well as our outstanding faculty, has been a huge contributing factor in helping us establish our record setting enrollment and presenting a positive atmosphere for us all. If you have the opportunity, please express your thanks to them for all the many tasks that they take care of with attention to detail and efficiency. Thanks to this wonderful group of colleagues.
Next Town Hall meeting coupled with the Parent Council will be September 11, 2006, 6:30 p.m. in the Williams-Parker Library. Bring a friend!
Call to Boosters: Join other moms and dads for a work session on Saturday, August 26, beginning at 8:30 a.m. Bring your gloves, cleaners, etc. for Fix Up/Clean Up Day at the football stadium, field house and concession stand. College representatives will be visiting our campus on a regular basis. We have charged Mr. Spigener with contacting and scheduling as many schools as possible that our students may have any interest in to come and make a presentation. Here is the list of commitments that have confirmed so far with many more to follow:
- September 17 (Sunday) 2:00-4:00 Woodward College Fair - all junior and senior parents will receive more information by e-mail.
- September 18 at 1:00 - UGA
- September 19 at 2:30 - Agnes Scott
- October 3 at 12:00 - SMU
We have had a great opening week! Again may I express our thanks to you all for your involvement and "Passionate Pride" in Brookwood School. I leave you again with a verse from a famous hymn: "Go tell it on the mountain!"
Blessings, Mike Notaro
