BROOKWOOD ALUMNUS TO APPEAR ON ABC'S 20/20 TONIGHT

ABC-TV's news program "20/20" will air a feature story about stress cardiomyopathy, or "broken heart" syndrome, this Friday, May 12. The story is one of several focused on medical mysteries, and "20/20" will kick off its new venture with a special two-hour show starting at 9 p.m., and titled: "Medical Mysteries Behind 'Grey's Anatomy." In the Hopkins feature, reporter Bob Brown interviews cardiologists Ilan Wittstein, M.D., and Hunter Champion, M.D., who together wrote the first clinical description of the condition, which was published in the New England Journal of Medicine in February 2005.

Hunter Champion, originally from Thomasville, Georgia, graduated from Brookwood School in 1989.  He then received his B.S from Emory University in 1993 with degrees in Biology and Human and Natural Ecology.  Hunter trained at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana where he received his M.D., Ph.D in Cardiovascular Pharmacology in 1999.  He is currently an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiology at Johns Hopkins where his research interests include pulmonary hypertension, heart failure and most recently has discovered the Broken Heart Syndrome with his colleague Dr. Ilan Wittstein.

 SAT PREPARATION COURSE

Matt Nicholson will be offering a SAT test preparation course for the upcoming SAT on June 3, 2006.  Matt graduated from Brookwood in 2002 as the valedictorian, and he will be graduating with honors from the University of Virginia as a Jefferson Scholar in Political Science this month.  He has taught seven SAT preparation courses over the past three years and has tutored students individually since graduating from Brookwood.  Many students have been able to improve their test scores by 100 to 200 points.  The course emphasizes strategies for taking the test and problem solving.  Because the New SAT now includes an essay section, Matt discusses the elements of a strong essay and what graders are looking for.  The course will consist of eight (8) sessions beginning on Thursday, May 25 and concluding on Friday, June 2.  The cost for the class will be $150. Students will also need to purchase The Official SAT Study Guide:  For the New SAT.  The deadline for signing up is Friday, May 19, 2006.  For more information contact Matt Nicholson at mbn6d@virginia.edu or call him at (434) 825-1124.

Maclay Pen Pals / Annual Picnic

The first grade classes are carrying on a three year tradition with Maclay School in Tallahassee, Florida. Each year the children are assigned pen pals for the year. They correspond with each other throughout the school year by writing letters and sending cards to each other. Finally, the long awaited meeting takes place and the children have the opportunity to meet and have a picnic lunch together. Each year the schools take turns hosting this special event. After a picnic and fun activities, pictures are taken as a keepsake. In addition to the valuable writing experience, the children will always remember the friends they made through this program.

First Grade Community Service Project - The Jared Box Project

Brookwood first graders shared their resources and assembled 33 "Jared Boxes" for local sick children in foster care. Jared was a child who died from a brain tumor.  During his hospital visits, he had a box of art supplies that helped him pass the time.  Jared noticed other sick children who did not have art supplies.  After his death, Jared's parents channeled their grief by helping other sick children with boxes of art supplies.  These boxes became known as "Jared Boxes."

Brookwood first grade students brought in so many supplies to make Jared Boxes, they had to ask for more plastic containers to fill!   The containers were donated by Wal-Mart and Jo Ann Bell, Dr. Amy Cooper, and Dr. Stephanie Fennell helped to coordinate this worthwhile project. Many thanks to everyone who helped make this project a success.

"BIGGER, FASTER, STRONGER" CLINIC....
ATHLETIC OPPORTUNITY FOR WARRIOR ATHLETES FROM COACH ROGERS

The Athletic Department has scheduled something brand new on the calendar that every athlete and coach in our school can benefit from attending.   THE DATES ARE JUNE 12th & 13th.

There are 40 - 50 certified clinicians with "Bigger, Faster, Stronger" in the country and one of them will be in and around our weight room for two days.  BFS is a weight room regiment that our football warriors have fiddled with throughout the past 3 years.  Over the past 3 months, Coach Boggs has gone full throttle with this program in his conditioning classes.  (One example of its effectiveness . . . We had 2 guys on the football team with a 40 yd time of less than 5 seconds at the beginning of January 2006 (sad but true)/ We currently have 8 under that time and several are closing the gap).  This gentleman will come in and fine tune Coach Boggs, myself, and any other coach or athlete who wants to learn how to make and become better athletes.  Coach Boggs has implemented his program from a video, a book, and 2 seminars, but nothing this "in depth".  We all will need to take ourselves back to "Square 1" in knowledge about the weight room and simply be a sponge during this event.

Over the past several years, 500 programs that have taken the plunge and brought in a clinician attained a state championship the following year.  Madison County Football in North Florida and Lowndes County Football in Valdosta are two of those most recent success stories that are in close proximate to Brookwood.  This clinic covers (1) proper form, (2) work-out regiment, (3) running, (4) stretching, (5) diet, and a variety of (6) other intangibles.  You will leave this event confident and your knowledge will increase in just two days.

The cost for athletes wishing to attend is $40.  The cost covers meals for the two days.  Form can be picked up at the front office or downloaded from our Website.  The time commitment is 9 am - 6 pm on Monday and 9 am - 4 pm on Tuesday. ATHLETIC PHYSICALS are scheduled to be given after Tuesday's work-out.  The promise is that you will leave motivated, the kids will leave better prepared for working toward success, and our Brookwood Athletic Program will be unified on building these student-athletes and focused on one program that will help them attain their goals.  Every athlete in every sport has a chance to make his or her self better in these two days as long as they apply that knowledge in the coming months.  Let's get committed to being the best we can be.  Coach Rogersve motivated, the kids will leave better prepared for working toward success, and our Brookwood Athletic Program will
