FROM THE HEADMASTER...

Last week was one of those weeks in which the strengths of Brookwood shone with particular brilliance.  At the beginning of the week we learned that one of our 5th grade students, Ann Varnedoe, won first place in the DAR American History essay contest and Carter Reed placed second.  The judges told us that our students' essays were better than most of the 7th and 8th grade essays from other schools and that our winning essays compared favorably with some college entries.  On Wednesday at the Thomasville Cultural Center's High School Art Contest we had 19 entries that were recognized.  One of our students, Jessie Singletary, won First Place.  She was joined by Brookwood students who won two third places, two out of three Awards of Merit and three Honorable Mentions.  Then on Thursday at the Regional Literary competition, Brookwood students won 9 first places in the 13 events.  Our school team points total surpassed the second place school by 33 points.  Next week 11 of our students-Michael Nicholson, Sweet Pea Kadis, Michael Youmans, Crighton Allen, Hananel Mavity, Anna Carroll Sims, Grant Stauffer, Elizabeth Wedding, Chase Clayton, Lauren Hancock, and D. J. Grooms-will represent Brookwood in the State Literary competition in Valdosta.

As you enjoy yourself and bid at the Auction Friday night, remember that the resources generated by that wonderful event go directly to the School and represent an investment in giving Brookwood students a competitive advantage so that they can continue to excel in the classroom, on the stage and on the field.

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY TAPPING CEREMONY

The 34th tapping ceremony of Brookwood School's National Honor Society took place last week in Chubb Hall.  The chapter, named for Louise Jeanes Hines, a founder who was a determining influence on Brookwood's focus on excellence, tapped 10 new membersCurrent NHS members were in charge of the candlelight ceremony.  These included Hannah LeGette, Crighton Allen, Kate Worthey, Elizabeth Wedding, Hannah Clark, Julianne Crew, Mary Catherine Alexander, Kristy Swann, Paige Graves, Sweet Pea Kadis, Michael Nicholson, and Michael Youmans.

New members tapped are Lee Roberts, Anne McPherson, Jonathan Wood, Lauren Johnson, Mark Coram, Laurel Derby, Daniel Chastain, Marielle Youmans, William Lee, and Kristen Wilson.

Faculty tap new members with a gold NHS key, some dating from 1973, which they place around the student's neck.  Parents view the tapping of their child by video, then they enter the room, accompanied by siblings, grandparents, and friends. All members of the NHS attended a luncheon hosted by Brookwood NHS alumna Charnie Beverly.
