BROOKWOOD E-NEWSLETTER

Wisdom, Honor, Achievement, Citizenship

October 28, 2005

News Flash!  Brookwood Wins Appeal!  Football Remains AA.

We were informed today that our appeal has been granted and we have been placed in the AA South Region for football.  We were already classified AA for other sports and competition.

Thank goodness that common sense and fair play prevailed.  Go Warriors!

FROM THE HEADMASTER...

Looking Outside the Bubble.  One comment about the recent situation regarding the withdrawn Supreme Court nominee was that those involved needed to look outside the bubble of the Washington world.  The same commentator noted how difficult that is to do once you are inside the bubble.  A recent trip to a professional meeting of independent school heads reminded me of the benefits of looking outside your bubble, whatever your bubble is.  When we can look outside our bubble, we see opportunities and approaches that make us better within our bubble.  We need an occasional perspective outside our own worlds that consume so much of our efforts and energy and attention.

At Brookwood we will be a stronger school if we can assist our teachers in getting outside the Brookwood bubble.  That point is the raison d'etre of professional development.  As the world becomes flatter, we need to venture forth and discover new ideas and approaches to bring back to Brookwood.  A more vigorous professional development program is essential if we are to continue to provide a superior educational experience in the years ahead.  We need to recognize this need and fund it accordingly.

***DRIVER EDUCATION

Tony Rogers will be teaching Driver's Education which will be offered in December with driving to be completed by early January.  While these dates are during Christmas vacation, previous times seemed to have too many conflicts, such as exams.

1.    The cost for taking Driver's Education is $175.00 for Brookwood students.

2.    Registration forms can be picked up at the front office.

3.    The only pre-requisite for taking the course is a current driver's license or learner's permit.

4.    The classroom times are

Friday, 12/16, 1:00-6:00

Saturday, 12/17, 8:00-6:00

Sunday, 12/18, 1:00-6:00

Monday, 12/19, 8:00-6:00

5.   The classroom dates are non-flexible (meaning they must attend these dates).  This constitutes the mandatory classroom requirement of 30 hours per student.

6.   The driving time of 6 hours per student will be assigned during the 1st week of the Christmas Holiday and after school during the weeks beginning following the 1st of the year.  Driving times will be scheduled to end by January 15.

If you are interested in Driver's Education but have a conflict with these dates, Brookwood intends to offer Driver's Education classes this summer.

**AUCTION UPDATE (Susan Varnedoe)

Hey-elp! Hey-elp! We need Hey-elp!

The Lower School class projects are well on their way. Mrs. Roach has almost everything she needs for these projects but needs the following help:

3rd Grade-Quilt:  If you are good at sewing, please volunteer your talent!

K:  We need someone to donate a canoe or john boat.

PK:  We need someone who can put this Doghouse together! This could be easy for someone with a little construction know-how!

Even if you do not have a child in these classes, consider helping out. It all goes for the same cause! Call Ginny Howard 227-0267 if you can help in any way!
