HOME FOOTBALL GAME BEGINS AT 7:30 TONIGHT!

***FROM THE HEADMASTER

A Salute to the Seniors.

Tonight is Senior Night at Warrior Field where we will honor our senior football players and cheerleaders and their parents at half time.  I want to take this opportunity to offer a word of thanks to the senior football players who have set such a good example of dedication and commitment to the football program.  Their attitude has been a very positive force on the team and has lifted the tone of our entire football program.  Tonight we recognize them for the countless hot hours during the past summers when they have spent the time so important in developing their strength and skills to the level where we are now very competitive.

We also recognize the work of our senior cheerleaders who have done such an outstanding job of lifting our spirits.  They have shown a consistency of commitment and enthusiasm that makes us all better Warrior supporters.

Finally, as in many cases at Brookwood, we would be remiss if we did not mention the importance of the support of the senior cheerleading and football parents.  Time and time again they have gone beyond the call of duty to make our program better.

Win or lose, we are proud of what our seniors have accomplished, but we will also be extremely happy if we win tonight.  That is what is supposed to happen at Senior Night.

Academic Accomplishment Throughout the School.

A week ago we noted the accomplishments of the Upper School students on the SAT and AP exams.  We should be aware that our students at Brookwood are distinguishing themselves at all levels.

We have recently compiled the results from last year's ERB tests taken by our Lower School students in grades 2 through 5.  Our students consistently scored in the 80th percentile or above on the national scale.  ERB does not provide the norms for the 2nd grade, but we do have results for the 3rd, 4th  and 5th grades as shown below:

                                                                        Third        Fourth        Fifth

Vocabulary                                                         NA             84             82

Auditory Comprehension                                    80               NA           NA

Reading Comprehension                                     85               78             84

Writing Mechanics                                              84               78             92

Writing Concepts and Skills                                82               80             86

Mathematics (Parts I & II)                                  89               81             87

We are even more excited by the fact that every grade improved their scores from one year to the next in reading comprehension, writing mechanics, writing skills and math.  In other words last year's 3rd grade showed improvement in every area when they were tested as 4th grade.  This kind of progress is very solid evidence of the strength of our Lower School program.

There is also good evidence of accomplishment in the Middle School. Congratulations to the following students who qualified for the Duke University Talent Identification Program (Duke TIP):  Grace Allen, Hayes Balfour, Jackson Brannon, Paul Brewer, Haley Caldwell, Katie Hooks, Ryan Hudson, Kyle Hunter, Will McGregor, Emily Myers, Paige Petrey, Mary Kathryn Pounds, Kaitlyn Roberts, Katie Rondello, Cory Sigler, Danny Steinberg, Brittany Vinson, Alex Walter, and Katherine Wolff.  These 7th grade students (over 60% of last year's class) qualified for this talent search by scoring at the 95 percentile or greater on the ERB.

Last week we announced students who were recognized by the College Board for their exceptional achievement on the Advanced Placement (AP) Exams.  Lauren Brown, Class of 2005, was left off the list by the College Board. We have checked and determined that he qualified for the AP Scholar with Honor Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.25 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on four or more of these exams.  We are sorry for the College Board's omission which we did not catch and congratulate him on this outstanding academic recognition.

***SHOW YOUR WARRIOR SPIRIT NIGHT

The Boosters Club is sponsoring "Show Your Warrior Spirit Night" during tonight's varsity home football game vs Fullington.  The game begins at 7:30 p.m.  The Lower, Middle and Upper School grade with the highest percentage of students attending this game will each be rewarded with a pizza lunch provided by the Boosters.  Upon arriving at the game, students will need to check in at the Boosters table located near concessions during the first quarter so that your grade receives credit for your attendance.

Auditions will be held in the Music and Art Building.  Parents, please note that the SAT will be given on Saturday morning from 8:00 until noon in Flowers Hall.  Kids playing and talking outside can serve as a distraction to the test takers.  Parents should drive down to the Music and Art Building to park and enter through the art patio to avoid distractions.

Students in grades PK-2 will audition from 9:00-9:30 a.m.

Students in grades 3-5 will audition from 9:30-10:00 a.m.

***BLOOD DRIVE

The Bloodmobile will be at Brookwood on November 22.  If you are a regular donor, please consider giving on that day at Brookwood.  We will put you at a convenient time.  Blood is urgently needed with the recent national calamities.  Donors from the affected places have not been able to give the usual supply.  The blood you give will be dispersed locally and to the places that need it the most.  Please contact the office if you are willing to give on this day.  Faculty and students (17 or 18 years old) are joining together to give blood and make the drive a success.  Ann Larson is the faculty contact for this project, sponsored jointly by the Key Club, led by Keith Massey, and the National Honor Society.  Please help others with the gift of life.
