***FROM THE HEADMASTER***
Recently the local newspaper did a story on the SAT scores of the local high schools. The newspaper did not call Brookwood to ask for our scores and thus we were not mentioned in the story. A number of people have asked how we compare to the local public schools, independent schools and the national averages, so we are including our scores along with the results that were printed in the newspaper and statewide averages from the College Board report. The scores are for the Class of 2005; the students who graduated last May.
Combined Average Score on the Verbal and Math Sections
National average 1028
Georgia average 993
GA Independent School average 1117
Central average 933
Thomasville average 932
Brookwood average 1135
Average Score on the Verbal Section
National Verbal 508
Georgia Verbal 497
Georgia Independent School Verbal 557
Central Verbal 466
Thomasville Verbal 460
Brookwood Verbal 575
Average Score on the Math Section

Georgia Independent School Math 560

While we continue to believe that our students should work to improve their SAT scores because of the increasingly competitive nature of the college admissions process, the data above support the conclusion that we are currently offering a superior educational opportunity for our students.
We would always qualify any remarks about SAT scores with emphasis on the fact that our primary goal is to prepare our students for success in college, and we feel strongly that rigorous classroom instruction is the best preparation and best measure of our success.
We have some additional evidence that illustrates the strength of our academic programs. On the Advanced Placement tests that were given last Spring, 25 students (42% of those in the 11th or 12th grades) took at least one test. In total our students took 49 AP tests. Of the 49 tests taken, our students scored a mark of 3 or above on 42 of the 49 tests for a percentage of 86% scoring 3 or above. On 33 of the 49 tests our students scored a mark of 4 or 5 for a percentage of 67% gaining those high marks. These scores are a testament to hard work of our students and the excellent teaching of Ann Larson, David Grooms, Carol Sheftall and Keith Massey.

***SENIOR AND FIRST GRADE BUDDIES
Once again, seniors and first graders have been paired as buddies for the year. Last week they met for initial introductions. With everyone wearing nametags, the younger ones identified their senior buddy by a sticker that matched their own. Then all the students sang a song together about friends. It took no time at all to become acquainted! In a matter of minutes, the Chubb Center was full of excited chatter and happy smiles. The first graders took their seniors into the classroom to show their desk, their work, and special interests and activities. Some senior buddies were kneeling beside a desk that they might have occupied when Mrs. Sims taught them! After refreshments, the buddies said farewell. They will meet several times during the semester. Both young and old buddies can leave notes for each other, and they can see each other at first grade lunch and recess.
