Competitive SAT Scores and AP Tests
September 9, 2005

Recently the local newspaper did a story on the SAT scores of the local high schools.  The newspaper did not call Brookwood to ask for our scores and thus we were not mentioned in the story.  A number of people have asked how we compare to the local public schools, independent schools and the national averages, so we are including our scores along with the results that were printed in the newspaper and statewide averages from the College Board report.  The scores are for the Class of 2005; the students who graduated last May.

While we continue to believe that our students should work to improve their SAT scores because of the increasingly competitive nature of the college admissions process, the data above support the conclusion that we are currently offering a superior educational opportunity for our students.

We would always qualify any remarks about SAT scores with emphasis on the fact that our primary goal is to prepare our students for success in college, and we feel strongly that rigorous classroom instruction is the best preparation and best measure of our success.

AP Scores
We have some additional evidence that illustrates the strength of our academic programs.  On the Advanced Placement tests that were given last Spring, 25 students (42% of those in the 11th or 12th grades) took at least one test.  In total our students took 49 AP tests.  Of the 49 tests taken, our students scored a mark of 3 or above on 42 of the 49 tests for a percentage of 86% scoring 3 or above.  On 33 of the 49 tests our students scored a mark of 4 or 5 for a percentage of 67% gaining those high marks.  These scores are a testament to hard work of our students and the excellent teaching of Ann Larson, David Grooms, Carol Sheftall and Keith Massey.
